Can someone explain to me in lame-mans terms how a 8th place team can get a at large bid, but not the team who placed 1st in that division. Taking into account that the 1st place team does NOT have an existing bid? I dont understand...

Some teams/gyms won't go with an at large bid.

So do they find out who would be willing to accept what type of bid prior to the competition, like I just dont understand how they are issued?

Usually when you register they ask if you'll accept an at large bid. Easier to know up front and not give it to you than to have to pass it down later.
