Wow! That's crazy that they would do that! I mean, I could understand if it was a really good price or something, but forcing people to stay at a certain place just to compete is not cool in my mind at all! I go to ATC in Bellevue every year and from what I saw on the website it looks like one of the hotels just give discounts if teams stay there. I feel like that is a much better idea considering how expensive of a sport cheer already is!

Stay to Play. Some competitions force you to stay in certain hotels in order to compete at the competition. And sometimes the hotels aren't cheap, and in some cases the close ones sell out and people are forced to stay like half an hour away. My team went to Pacwest in Portland Oregon and there was a girl who couldn't afford the close hotels and was forced to stay in Vancouver WA. Sucks.
And i know some competitions have "exemption" or "special circumstances". I believe if your team is within 60 or 90 miles you don't have to STP. There are exemption forms for people who have family in that area.
At American Showcase in Anaheim my dad got the cheapest hotel he could find through STP and then we just booked a Disneyland hotel and didn't even show up to the STP hotel.

I've been thinking about going to Pac West since I live in Bellingham, WA. My friends and I go to ATC every year and made it to Sea to Sky in Vacouver BC but we still haven't gone to Pac West. We love going to comps since one of my former campers is on VAS, but then we also basically cheer for EVERYONE else cheering as well! haha

Oh wow I didn't realize you were from Bellingham! i live about an hour ish south of you! Pacwest and Spirit Cheer are the biggest comps around because of summit bids!

Awesome! I'll have to look into both for this year. I'm hoping I can make it to a few more than just the 2 last year. Especially since book 2 in my cheer series comes out in September and book 3 will be out in January. If nothing else it will be additional research for my books, and maybe I can even meet people who have read my books! Haha

Okay.....time for me to be "that newbie" and ask the more than likely obvious question... What is STP? Sorry if it was already explained a few posts ago, I tried to scroll through and didn't see it.
STP=Stay to Play. It's the policy used by many event producers that requires athletes to book hotel rooms through a specific housing company they've contracted with.

i honestly think STP is the dumbest thing ever and the fact that they would disqualify a team for not staying in an expensive hotel is shady to me. if you pay the entry fee, and im sure plenty of other fees that go along with attending NCA etc. i think its sad that a company would do that to a gym/team.
Worlds doesnt do this correct....

At Worlds you can register as a "commuter" team and stay wherever you want. The registration fee is a little higher.

i could never see it being moved or held here for obvious reasons, but the inside of the convention center isnt really the greatest layout for a major cheer competition. Unless they where to logistically change the way they do nca, i could see it being more realistic to how cheersport is run, with multiple floors in different areas, etc.

I don't see them moving NCA anywhere, I just wondered how many convention centers were bigger than KB Hutchison and GWCC. I would love Chicago (#1) but, the decent hotels are usually priced above the NCA STP prices to begin with, and the weather in February can be brutal. I don't think the West Coast would appreciate another FL (#2) event. Vegas (#3) would probably be comparable to Dallas with hotel and flights but, there aren't as many gyms located on the West Coast so, the majority of gyms would have to fly or miss a lot of school. Atlanta has Cheersport, #5 is back in Vegas and #6-9 only offer 90,000 more sq feet than KBH. And, as you said, even though they're larger, it doesn't necessarily make them conducive for cheer.

This so much. I love competing in Chicago (IMO their venues are excellent usually) but it's very hard to travel anywhere for competitions in the Midwest in the winter. Does this stop people from attending, or competitions from happening? Of course not, but it can be very difficult to get anywhere lol, and it's a little scary because of how icy the roads can get too. That being said, NCA in Chicago would be amazing for gyms in my area, but probably not so much for other gyms in different parts of the country lol.
