Yeah I’m betting game day is causing a problem. Everyone is doing game day, and I heard staffers at camp encouraging any and every team to “try Nationals” via Game Day.

A LOT of schools in West TN are competing in Game Day that haven't competed past state (and sometimes past regionals) in years, if ever.

    I guess my complaint is:

they’ve known since December 15th how many bids were handed out and since January 8th how many deposits were made.

I understand college nationals was last weekend, but it should have been done.

May nobody get injured or pick up an illness within the period of the potential 2 a days or during football field practice

May all your stunts hit and tumblers stick their passes

May you achieve your goals, even if it was just being at the championship for the first time or heck a white jacket

May you coaches get all the love for all the hard work you've done since when you selected your teams

    Good Luck this Week!

One of our local middle schools closed for several days at the end of last week when they had over 250 flu cases. I’m hoping all their cheer kids are healthy for NHSCC.

The one thing that I notice is the fact that most large varsity coed and some medium varsity teams have is a more collegiate style routine even though they're still permitted to perform two high pyramids and non-flipping baskets. Thoughts?

I’m not sure I understand the question, but I’ll take a shot at it.

I think all of your top scoring varsity teams this weekend will have routines that mimic the UCA college style. It’s not just those two divisions. You can get away with a little bit of style variety, but spending a lot of time on needless transitional stuff and flashy dance moves a la NCA college style, will pull you too far out of the score sheet.

In my area, almost all the top high school coaches are folks who came from SEC cheer (and usually team USA), and almost all of those teams go to UCA rather than NCA. The measure of success of your program is more in the uniforms that your athletes wear after graduation than in National titles won. It doesn't make sense to train kids in skills that they won't be asked to show at the college clinics.

You mean the likes of Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU and Ole Miss, not to mention AAC school UCF?

As a Californian, I’d be okay with giving up Game Day. Big showy sideline cheer isn’t really a part of our football culture like it is in other states (at least in my area). Plus it’s not as demanding, skills-wise.

Additionally, I think lots of teams here more or less look at Game Day as elective... something you pursue if you have the time and resources. It’s not the primo reason you go to UCA (like show cheer is) and therefore is not essential to the experience. I don’t think any CA teams go just for Game Day. Consequently, I don’t think it’s be too much of a sacrifice for most of us.

Moving Gameday to Sunday would be one potential solution given the points you make (all of which are valid).

I wonder how that would affect Gameday as it’s current status as the lure for new teams. I also wonder how that would affect the relationship with Disney. Teams (several in our area) that are using Gameday to get their feet wet, come in to compete then rock it out at Disney for the rest of the weekend. I wonder if those same first-timers could get out of school early enough to spend the same amount of time filling the Disney coffers if their school districts had the ability to say “fly in on Saturday, fly out on a Monday.”

I think Disney would probably be just fine if they lost a few potential customers because of schedule changes. The turnout over that weekend is so huge I’m not even sure that the absence of a few teams would even register as a significant blip on their radar.

We compete Gameday and traditional this year- we are having a BLAST with Gameday- but would definitely make that concession.
