Oh-and I don’t know if anyone follows middle school, but the school formerly known as Schilling Farms is now Collierville West-and has the same colors and mascot as Collierville Middle.

Hey McCourt you want to stay seated until your name is called or do you want to take away from Bullit’s second place and look undignified and tacky?

No where near as undignified and tacky as this post. Those kids heard all the names being called and knew there were two left. Process of elimination would indicate that when team B was called for second team A took first. They worked their tails off for it and celebrated at the moment it was confirmed. You have a problem with genuine emotion? Stay out of athletics.

Edited to add: OR come up with a better way to announce results.

Yeah exactly. If there’s only one name left — and its yours — just wait and let the second place team that ALSO worked hard have their moment.

As much as I would have loved my kids to always sit stoically and let #2 enjoy their moment, it did not always happen. They're kids and they get excited.

I don't think they mean anything malicious by it.

For what's it's worth, I like how MAJORS reveals results. All the placements are up on the screen and they count down from 10 and drop the curtain. Everyone sees everything at same time. You are free to react how you want.

Related to the comp, if you're not watching, Bartram Trail just hit pretty hard (Large D1.)

The awards presentation is set up and dramatized for this exact moment. They’re baited into their response by the whole announcement process. If the company didn’t want that response they’d name top 5 or top 3, and everyone else would get their results when they got their score sheets.

That’s not how it’s done though; and even if they don’t call all the names, Teams know how they’re placed in the previous rounds and they have a pretty good idea of where they stand. The tension is further stirred by the announcers with created pauses and dramatic tones, changes in their vocalization, etc.

Don’t blame the kids for taking the bait. That’s short-sighted.

Update for those not watching: Not very many hits today in Large (either division) today so far. Rough because Greenup and Hagerty were reallllly close without their SFs.

Only hit zeroes I noticed so far: Dixie Heights, Bartram, but half the division is still left. St. Hubert is also on deck!

ETA: St Hubert had 1 SF in the cheer.

I’m sure they didn’t, but it was a real turnoff for me. McCort was seated right in front of the castle and Bullitt was off to the side somewhere. So when they announced Bullitt as second and McCort reacted, it was all you saw. I didn’t even see Bullitt get their trophy. So maybe it’s as simple as redoing the seating arrangement. Put first and second on opposite sides of the mat so they don’t distract from one another if they do react.

I appreciate kids get excited, but I also know it’s possible for them to keep their cool. United vs. Houston last year at awards = calm, cool, veteran perfection.

Speaking of United: I don’t think I’ve ever seen fear spread like wildfire through a team mid-performance like that before. It broke my heart. Behold: the curse of being TOO good. If you never fall in comp, you don’t know how to handle it necessarily when it does happen. That’s EXACTLY why I preach to my girls: it’s not about your physical strength. It’s mental and emotional as well. Can you keep your head straight if it all goes to hell? Can you recover? It’s a lesson nobody wants to learn, but a necessary one.
