I would say that there are great programs with marquis names in those cities. Charlotte has Cheer Athletics with 15 teams, Chicago has ICE, Phoenix has Cheer Central Suns which is a great program, and I'm not sure about Denver.

Cheer Central Suns has a gym in Phoenix? I know their main/original gym is right outside of Denver.

And, sometimes the coach who gets on your kid the most is a b!tch who is under the influence of parents who have decided to target your kid because of her position on the team.

    Just another perspective …

On the flipside of the favoritism debate.

(Not even talking about the gym in question because this discussion has gotten pretty broad.)

People like to accuse coaches of playing faves when often that child is the best fit for whatever spot or skill.

Example: I coach HS. The was much hew and cry when I (gasp) made the same girl center flyer and point jump last season.

I do not hate your kid.

    I promise.

It's just that that girl's elite stunt group was strongest at the time. So were her jumps.

I am not going to put my strongest jumps back left just because someone may think I have a favorite because she is front/center in 2 things.

Also, if your child is constantly back left in jumps.

    Or constantly a jump nugget.

Or constantly being taken out of standing tumbling.

It may serve you well to step back and look at the common denominator.

Ex: I have had folks swear to me I was picking on their daughter til they came to game to actually SEE their kid's jumps.

My kid deserves back left corner for jumps and I freely admit that. She isn't front row material for much except dance. It took 3 years for her to get a tumbling pass. I have never complained about her spot, to a coach, not once. It isn't my place.

What we are talking about is coaches who verbally abuse children they don't like. Constantly putting them down in front of the other "better" cheerleaders and their mommies. Tells a child they have no hope of doing better, they will always be level 1. Yells, screams, and punishes to the point a child doesn't want to be there.

It takes a special kind of parent to know and accept their child weaknesses. It's the parents who think their child is the best at everything that tends to develop kids with false sense of reality.

Favoritism to me is when someone who is obviously not the best pick for a spot in the front is chosen because mom is pals with owner, sister has cheered there for 10 years, mom is team mom, mom gave coach an expensive present, etc. It does happen.

Of course there are also many instances where parents think it's happening but it's not. lol.

Every time favorites get brought up, it reminds me of a school cheer season a long time ago. Everyone was convinced Suzy was my favorite. I still to this day do not know why! Kids griped to parents. They griped to each other, etc. Everything was so unfair and it was all because Suzy was my favorite. The real story though, I never even liked Suzy. She wasn't very coachable, she couldn't make grades to save her life, she had an unnecessary sense of entitlement, and her parents weren't exactly great.

It's human nature to have favorites. I always tell kids my favorites are the ones who listen and do their job. It can and will change daily, based on who is exceeding the expectations I have set. Everyone can be a favorite if they want to be.

Not exactly the same as this discussion but Cheer Updates posted that Maryland Twisters Reign forfeited their paid bid from WSF due to roster changes. They are going for another paid bid this weekend at Reach the Beach.

Does that mean a team at WSF was able to upgrade their At Large bid to Paid?
