That's handy. That way you know who is going to be there when and you can structure accordingly. Plus the kids still get a break.

Personally, if you are on a high-level, over-rostered team, I don't get why you'd ever give them the opportunity to cut you. Imagine bumming off in the summer and getting stuck as an alternate (or worse, cut) on a team that goes off to win worlds. THAT would be a tough pill to swallow.

In sweden most gyms starts to practise in august.
Some elite teams have a first tryout at the beginning of june and then the real tryout in august.
I had tryouts yesterday for a L6 team and the first practise is thursday! :D

In summer I completely understand if you miss practice or a family vacation because it was probably planned far in advance but I have issues with people missing practice because they went to a friends lake house for the day or it was the only day their boyfriend didn't work so they just had to hangout with them.

Omg! Shimmy times a million!! Or the kids that take 5 different vacations ! I understand its a demanding sport but If your going to miss most of the summer then your really gonna be behind everyone else. From a coaches stand point summer is the time to condition and perfect your skills . The fall is the time to start putting it all together in the routine. If you want the summer off then maybe allstar isn't for you.

What I hate more then missing in the summer are people who take their kids on vacations all school year... not kidding. Not only are we away on a European Cruise for 2 weeks, the beach for a week, visiting family out of state for a week, then it's as soon as october hits, oh, now we are taking the family here... Hello.. school?

There is no way in the UK that I could insist on a summer attendance policy, I'd have no cheerleaders left as their parents would just pull them. I run open house sessions all summer - some girls turn up every session, a couple I haven't seen all summer as they are away. I do have an unofficial line of "if you're at home I expect to see you at training" but then I get the messages "I can't next Wednesday as I'm going to Alton Towers/V festival/a party etc". I'm ok with it as long as they let me know ahead of time.

The summer gives me an opportunity to switch around with stunt groups and find out who works best together and it also gives the girls a chance to "play with a flyer". I set them into stunt groups with vague instructions of 'stunt on one leg, must have x, y and z skills, and see what you come up with. Have fun and be legal and safe!' It also allows me to try out stunts to put into the competition routines. we've also been able to get some intensive training in with their tumbling, a number of them have come on such a long way this summer :)

Our summer comes to an end in 1 week :( and then mandatory training kicks in. However, the summer has allowed me to have all the routines set and ready to go and to have all the stunt groups set according to who works best with each other. It is not ideal, but I like it ;)

ETA: oh and those who are missing the whole of summer take pot luck where they end up in the routine - you wern't here, tough!

I'm not an all star coach, but my high school girls must attend camp and any events we have planned as team events over the summer. Outside of that practices are mandatory, except they can take vacation but they must be turned in a month in advance and approved by me. This way I can plan according to who I am going to have there. I had a few this year that have made me already rewrite my policy on vacations for next year limiting it to 6 practices only. I had a couple girls taking vacations all the time with friends and family just to get out of practice. But, sucks to be them in they don't know the material, then you don't cheer...competition or sideline.

In the summers our athletes get 6 absences if you practice twice a week or 9 if you practice 3 times per week. After Labor Day, one per half of the season. Miss more than 1, removed from next competition. Miss more than that, off the team.

I cheer HS and once we learn choreo, practice is mandatory. This is the first year I've missed or been late to practices. I have an internship but my coach understands. We have alternates that are able to step in for an absence, which is new. I feel a little better about not being able to make things. Being in HS things happen out of our control so I think my coach is accommodating. My AS team was the same way.

What state are you in? Our high school teams are not allowed to practice during the summer (although many schools bend the rules and some blatantly break them, but regardless an athlete can not be forced to go to anything and there can not be repercussions for an athlete not attending. I thought it was a national rule but perhaps it is just for our area.

In Illinois you can have up to 25 practices during what they consider the summer months which is basically the last week of May, June and the first two weeks of July. After that then it's game on. I couldn't imagine not being allowed to practice during the summer. How do you learn all of the sidelines, cheers, and a routine?

We practice all summer here... In fact we actually compete at regionals mid-July and State is September.... So we wouldn't have any other option lol. We have "dead week" where the coaches can't contact us at all though. All the sports and activities have one set by the state I believe... Although it may be the school district. Since we don't set it ourselves its always conveniently a week or two before comp.

my daughters gym sayd they have a strict policy but I've never seen it enforced. Our gym is closed for a summer break for about 10 days. My daughter does vist her dad out of state but while she is gone I make sure she does privates and her coach tells me what she's needs to work on. I'm not to upset with kids missing in the summer, but once choreography has been taught then everyone needs to be in attendance, now we are learning a routine to compete and that only gets better with practice

Old Gym: summer practices was pretty flexible and long as you didn't miss choreography coaches/owner OK.

Current Gym: states all practices are mandatory after choreography, there are a quite a few who have missed a lot of practices after choreo due to (summer camps, vacay, etc) Doesn't seem there are any harsh consequences for the individual(s), just the team suffers when they cant work on stunts because the flyer/base is missing frequently

We had a summer break for 4 weeks now - the whole august.
First because all our practise space is in schools and closed during holidays. Practising outside is not an option because of weather and insurance.
Then most of our coaches (incl. me) were on vacation.

I was talking about staying fit and conditioned over the summer over and over again, mentioning that whoever looses skills or flexibility because of laziness can expect to loose position in the routine or on the team.

I'm excited to see who worked over the summer and who didn't put much effort in it.

All team members will be back in the middle of September, so this is when attendance rules start to really be enforced.
