The $$ to fly back on Monday were outrageous! Too much for our few crossovers. Just have to plan ahead and get assignments, maybe toss a college tour in for 1 or 2 excused days and have kids actually do homework during the week.

Most teachers are totally fine with giving you work in advance or letting you take an exam early if they have it ready

AP exams start on Monday here. Summit really needs to move back to April. We are too close to graduation.

Good point- I forgot about school attendance. CP is missing 3 days for Summit and freaking out about it. Luckily her teacher has been very accommodating but I'm sure not all schools are.

I hadn't realized it used to be in April. When was it changed? April would be so much better. I am guessing they moved it to allow more teams to get bids to attend?

Since it’s finals for colleges, a lot of schools don’t do tours now. And I know UCF was overbooked around Summit when I checked back in March (they are high on CP’s list due to merit aid).

So, I was just told they have run out of some of the awards they give out to finalists (just like they did last year well before the event was over). This year, they have run out Day 2 of a 4 day event after only doing probably less than 25% of the divisions.

Last year was the first year in over a decade that someone "beat" Worlds for the title of worst-run event of our season. (D1 Summit 2018). Worlds has made that a tough competition this year, but Summit could still pull it off.

I have said it before, but the marketing and business strategy behind Summit is absolutely brilliant in nearly every way. It has made their company untold millions and driven most of their event competitors out of business. However, the execution of the event lags FAR behind the concept of it - particularly last year.

I don't remember the year, but maybe the first and second summits were in April? It probably depends on when Easter is. It was late this year. CP starts AP tests next year, I'm already worried about the schedule.

I have the same concern. And if I have to choose between my kid attending AP exams or cheerleading, then AP exams will win every time. I’ve heard that the exam schedule comes out in August. I’m
not sure how we will handle it

Two years in a row retired youngest had AP exams the day before or day after the Summit. Check with your AP admin, we were able to pay $45 per exam to move them to the make up date a couple of weeks later. It's my understanding IB exams must be taken on the given date.

I dealt with this a bit my junior year (2013) we had our AP exams like the the day after I flew home from summit so luckily for me it all worked out. Coming from someone who took their academics seriously but still eat, slept, and breathed cheerleading, if at all possible make both happen and just try to get the exam changed! I know that summit and competitions may not mean much after you graduate but no matter how many times it’s still such a great experience and memories you will have forever. I would take that over a little knock to my GPA any day if it can be afforded! I had a 4.3 GPA and took many AP classes and I can attest to the fact that (at least in Ohio) universities don’t really care all that much about AP classes and scores. Some don’t even accept the credit and if they do they will still recommend you take the class at the college level (as do I). I am now 22 years old I got my BS in Biology in 3 years and I’m 6 months away from my 2nd BS degree in nursing . And I can tell you the AP classes I took and those tests are NOTHING compared to the experience of the competition. I understand some kids may struggle a bit more in school, but if your child is in AP classes I’m sure that’s not the case. I hope I didn’t offend or anything and I know I rambled, but I really like to share my experiences in case it helps at all. I know when I was in high school I had no clue how things would be and I worried way too much about my academics. Being older now I realize it’s high school. If your at the level of taking AP classes then I’m sure you already have the choice of most universities so enjoy the experiences you can have while you can still have them because one day your 22 sitting on fierceboard wishing you could get it all back!

But hopefully the schedules will work out and no choices will have to be made and I will stop derailing the thread now :)

I think Varsity forgets our athletes are children with school requirements and this is a busy season. I get the End of Season point but still many of our kids have missed days throughout the year for cheer... there has to be a better way.

I understand your points completely - and agree - which is why my student athlete gets to travel through out the year. BUT at least where we live AP exams are common and in no way set you apart they are now expected and commonplace for any college track student - choice of university is not the case in our area at all. Also cheer is not considered an excused absence and schools in our area are not required to allow rescheduling. Moving Summit back would help but then it would mean the same of Worlds. If this is a sport of youth and teens then the organization has to start realizing academics matter and they need to start getting creative in how to make this work better. I don't have the answers but I feel moving it back is a start.

I feel like if you and other major gyms took a stand and told your parents up front they deserve better and until this is better you are no longer attending it would have an effect. It is hard taking a stand - but your name and gym mean something in this industry. I get some parents may leave but I think you'd be surprised how many parents would stand beside you. Parents often feel like they must follow the vocal minority or they will be penalized by the gym. You are not the first gym owner I have heard tis from. Our large gym owner said something similar before - yet they too are driven by the belief that all parents want this. I'd love to see gym owners demand more.
