Depending on the division, it may actually be easier to make it to finals from the wild card round than from the semi-finals. We have also seen the performance order in finals give advantages to those coming out of the wild card round. It isn't always the case, but it is nearly impossible to know that ahead of time.

Also, gyms with larger number of teams may not be able to go to enough bid (Varsity) events to give all of their teams realistic shots at bids if they only accept at larges (or paid). Some parts of the country are also highly competitive for the limited number of bids out there.

There is nothing wrong with a gym choosing to only accept at larges or above for Summit (or similarly only accepting Paids for Worlds). However, there is also nothing wrong with choosing to accept them either. FWIW - we have won Worlds on at larges many times and I believe we have won Summit on wild card bids. (or at least had high finishes in finals - memory is hazy on that)

Yep in our division last year the WC winner went last in finals which wasn't fair.

Now that the top 3 move on, in a smaller division it's a good chance to move on.

Why do you feel like it isn't fair?

They should be put in order by pts like all the other teams in semi's.

The perception is that going towards the end helps your score. The wildcard team getting the automatic "premium" spot in finals over all of the at-larges seems unusual.

Wow- I just saw the results for the competition we attended this week-end....and I really have so little faith in this whole Summit thing anymore...Three WC's were awarded. It was a large competition with great teams. Every one of the bids went to a level one team. And one of the teams came in 6th in their category out of 13. Mind blown. And this is in a region where bids are hard to come by...

It's possible that the other 5 teams either already have bids or maybe they wouldn't accept anything but an AL or P bid.
