My CP has an injury of CMC joint in thumb. She is a base. Currently not basing or tumbling working her way back. Trying to find splint that would work for both. Has a good brace for stunting but metal bar in it pretty much makes tumbling a no go. She is seeing a hand specialist and getting OT so lots of expert medical care, but would love to hear from some experienced bases and tumblers on this. Hoping I can find a couple of options and present to doctor for their medical opinion.

Has she been cleared to go back yet? Or are you looking for something that might allow her to return sooner? Also the metal bar in the splint might work as a good protector for her thumb but what happens if the flyer gets whacked in the head with it when caught?

She has been cleared to start doing things at a slow pace her call and coaches have been very supportive with this. I think she probably has about 2 more weeks until she is ready but trying to find some options to help her smoothly through the process. The metal bar is in a protected area and padded and was approved to be used prior to her being casted etc (small aluminum would really explain it before keeps her thumb from bending wring direction stunting but that inhibits tumbling need an in between this and nothing). We are not pushing to go back too quick and this is not our first round through this crazy injury thought we were done fully pain free and cleared and then bam (which is where we have come to realize she may need an in between support). I have seen other CPs on here list similar injuries and hoping maybe there is something we have not researched in the way of an in between brace. Taping is an option that we may have to go with but I think mentally her having something she physically puts on herself will help more mentally. There may be no other options.

Just food for thought, youngest cp dislocates her knee and wears a knee stabilizer that comes with padded splints on both sides. Her orthopedic told us whenever we purchased a new brace to be sure to remove the splints because if she falls with any force in that area, the splint will make the splinted bone rigid and the non-splinted bone next to it will break. I don't know the design of the brace but, if a flyer could come down with enough force to bend that splint back, you might reconsider until she can base with a brace without a splint.
