....That is my question. I'm debating if I wanna join a sorority this upcoming fall (I'm starting at Florida Gulf Coast University). I wanna know your positives and negatives of being a part of Greek life!

At some schools its necessary, but at others its small. You should look into it at your specific school and see what percentage of students are involved. Talk to your future roomies or friends on what they are doing. If you cheer in college, it might be a lot to put on your plate, but I know lots of people ho do both perfectly. Good luck

It's relatively new at FGCU and I didn't make the cheer team so that's something I won't have to deal with this year. I don't have a roommate yet but am looking for one..

I think it's important to get involved at your school, and a sorority is definitely one way to do that! It's expensive but you have to decide for yourself what the pros and cons are

I went greek in college and it was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. But it really has to do with the school' s atmosphere. If no one is really into greek life at the school it will be boring, but it everyone is excited and involved its a lot of fun!

I would definitely recommend it!! I go to an SEC school where Greek Life is HUGE, so you can get to know a lot of people quite quickly. If your school has continuous recruitment, I would try that, especially if you're not sure if you're going to like it. That's what I did, and I ended up loving it. :) As others have said, it can be kind of expensive, but I honestly think its worth it. I hope this helps!!

I'm Sigma Alpha Epsilon. I would highly recommend it for most people, but it's not for all. I waited until the fall of my 2nd year and think most people should wait at least 1 semester to get their legs under them in college, though I know many are successful right away.

Also you don't have to be a social butterfly and do every stupid thing an active wants you to do. If your fraternity/sorority starts hazing, politely but firmly refuse (seriously). You'd be surprised how many people will just say okay. If they insist, then you have to decide to perpetuate stupidity or walk away.

There are a great many brothers that I haven't seen in years (though Facebook helps reconnect), but I truly know I can call any of them and they will help immediately if I need it.

    Good luck.

Thank you to all! I'm seriously considering it! I'm gonna talk with my mom and see what she says as I would move in a day before everyone else

It's a great way to put yourself out there and meet new people. I did it for my freshman and sophmore year and even though I didn't do it for all 4 years, I wouldn't go back and change my decision for anything. It's a great way to get involved with alot of different activities, meet LOTS of new people, and try new things. I was pretty shy and for me, it was a way to put myself out there and make new friends. If I had been in the dorms or living off campus, I probably would've been somewhat of a hermit cause I'm not that outgoing. If your school offers a "greek weekend/preview" for incoming freshman, I would definitely suggest going to that to see what they are all about!

Go Greek! I'm a Chi Omega! I went through recruitment Fall of freshman year and it was a great way to meet people because I was so far away from home. There are so many benefits aside from friendship. Being around an ambitious group of girls kept me out of trouble & helped me focus on my schoolwork. I even gave up cheering for it, eventually. I did my sorority during the school year and cheerleading camp staff during the summer, which was a great balance if you love to do both.

Inbox me if you have any questions about anything!

I used to go to FGCU and have heard that the hazing is really bad. I would try to ask some of the girls there how the hazing is. A lot of sorority stuff is really kept secret but you should try to get as much insight as possible so you have a better idea of what you're getting into rather than "omg I made friends for life it's a sisterhood!" because yes, you will get all of that but you may not necessarily know of the time commitments for pledging, meetings, and socials. And if the time commitment is too big and your grades start slipping, you probably will be in trouble with Greek life at that point because there is usually a minimum GPA requirement. greek life is supposedly awesome (i haven't been a part of it yet) but you have to make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. i had a really bad experience with hazing at one school and i was up til 2 every night with 8 am classes and miserable and depressed. greek life is supposed to make you a better you, so make sure that is what you will get! hope I helped!

I was reading on some school website that they have a huge anti-hazing policy but they could just be saying that.. Rush week is the week before classes start so I have time to decide. Thanks!
