@SarahS I agree with you about keeping it quiet and professional. This is my only public statement about it and no one around me knows I've even done this. ((Unless there are lurkers reading about it and reporting back to people that would care.))
I don't report anything unless I have proof. And this doesn't directly affect me but it does indirectly because it's hindering the all star prep division that several other gym owners and I are trying to pump up. This is a must have division in all star. AND I say leave the rec division alone. Those kids are in a whole different class of cheer anyway (besides yours ;) )and I'm just not really a fan of sandbagging divisions.

You're in Louisiana right? This past year I became familiar with a rec team from there that competes at UCA High School Nationals. I was baffled that they were rec. I've met and talked to the coaches a few times, and the last time was given their numbers and told to call if I have questions or am interested in starting up a program like theirs. My first question to them was how exactly they're rec because they don't do anything but compete. I asked how they're different from Allstars and the only answer given is they choose to have the school style. While I like the coaches, their program and actually think a similar set up would be perfect around here, I just can't get past the fact that I don't think what they're doing is allowed. I'm not up on my rules but I thought rec was defined as primarily cheering for a rec sport. I have no dog in the fight and am not in a division where they would ever be a threat, but I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for the true rec teams they're crushing.

We beat out a "rec" team yesterday that was actually an all star team (not in our division, but we won grand champion of all rec divisions including levels 3 and 4). Just comparing percentage of perfection to the earlier all star session (which isn't entirely accurate since scores are somewhat relative to others in your division, but I don't care, I'm gonna brag anyway) we would have won the youth level 1 all star division had we been entered in it. My point? True rec teams aren't always crushed by all star teams :)

I can think of two teams near me that do this/did this (one is no longer in existence). They didn't cheer for any sport but were straight competition teams in the rec division. I think it happens everywhere... and I think it's totally legal to do it because they do have the different format than the all star teams.

Not "legal" with every event producer. Some require you to either be a part of a local parks and rec program/boys and girls club or cheer for community teams or both [and some EPs require a minimum specific percentage of the team to have cheered during a sports season (which allows for additions after the sports cheering season is done - thank goodness since I'm always adding/losing kids due to being on a military base)]... The problem comes in enforcement of the rules.

As to your second point of rec being "a different format than the all star teams" - no, not on the varsity score sheet or on the JamBrands score sheet (other EPs actually do have different requirements for rec, including having a cheer, and some even have non tumble or non stunt rec divisions). Rec is scored EXACTLY the same as all star for Varsity/Jam. If rec teams do something different (like have a cheer section or do lots of dance or do no/little tumbling) at a Varsity or a Jam event... it is for one of two reasons. Either their coaches don't understand how to max the score sheet or something is preventing them from following the score sheet exactly (their organization may require them to do a cheer/does not allow tumbling more than a cartwheel because no one is trained in how to teach or spot tumbling, or they may compete at mostly all-rec comps that require a cheer so it makes little sense to have two versions of a routine, etc).

Sorry didn't mean to imply that! This particular program has been crushing teams in their division, and if they entered the true school division would have an amazing shot at crushing a lot of the top level teams as well. Not all are the same and definitely don't want to imply that rec teams can't be better than all-star! Congratulations on your success!!

I know exactly what you mean though. They have the talent and ability to win the school division or even an all star prep division. Or heck even an all star division. They're just taking advantage of the lax rules and supposed "easy" win in rec. And it has been easy for them. Very.

The Louisiana team is a fraud! They not only have no sports team but they are school affiliated , and have a paid college level coach. It's terrible ! The fact that they sandbag to win is disgusting !

Yep... UCA rules state Rec teams must cheer for a youth sport. The age thing is not. Rule breaker.. However they are the only team allowing 10th graders to compete with 7-8th graders .. UCA just changed age grid this last season.. A lot of the teams were not happy abt it.. The LA coach is a big name I. UCA.. From what I hear.. Hard to compete my 7th graders against 10th graders :( disappointed by UCA this year big time
