All-Star Rudeness At Awards!

BTW, it is still one of my biggest pet peeves when people publicly criticize children and essentially judge their character by putting those few seconds of incredible happiness/disappointment under a microscope.

I agree. We are dealing with kids, after all. While we shouldn't tolerate name-calling or taunting, I can't totally get with the idea that cheering when you find out you won an award is some kind of major offense.

Now that being said, I know many gyms, including ours, are VERY strict about behavior at awards including the idea that you don't celebrate until your name is called.

Let's compare celebrations to other sports like my favorite, college football. When a team scores a last second win, they go nuts! Jumping all over each other and celebrating. Love it. And they should do so.

As long as they aren't pointing and taunting, they should completely enjoy the victory. I think that's very similar to a team finding out they won. As long as there is not taunting, they should celebrate as much as they like.

Perhaps we could take hockey as an inspiration where, at the end of a series, the two teams line up and shake hands. Could an EP work out something like that?

I would think that would be an awesome idea, actually. That, along with the idea of announcing scores as you go, would go a long way.

I agree!! Especially at the bigger comps I think that the judges should have everyone stand up when it comes to the final two teams and give a handshake/hug, but now that I think of it that could just be a little time consuming... especially for the parent that just want to leave the arena

The handshake thing would be much easier to do if the athletes already had time to absorb the results.

Imagine there was a instant replay review of a go-ahead touchdown on the last play in a football game and everyone was waiting for the official to come back from watching the tape. Now picture the two teams thinking "while we are waiting here, why don't we just go ahead and shake hands with the other team and make them hold off on the announcement of who won." That just doesn't happen in other sports.

NOTE: Many teams congratulate each other already - it just isn't always seen by the critical masses in the stands.

I completely understand. I'm just brainstorming to get something that would make it easier for people to accept the reactions of the team when they find out they won.

If you notice in our video above, when they announce us as the final 2 teams, we have already made a circle together. I did notice after we did this, that other teams in other divisions did it as well and both teams were congratulating each other. There was so much great sportsmanship at all batc awards.

Fair enough. I am curious when people decided that it was poor sportsmanship to celebrate immediately when you knew you won. In the 90s, everyone celebrated like that and no one seemed to get their feelings hurt by it.

I still think that this is more of a please-the-crowd thing than an actual test of true sportsmanship.

It always makes me really, really happy when I see videos of awards ceremonies and I see kids from the teams that didn't win hugging and high fiving the kids on the team that won their division. Putting away your disappointment for a second and showcasing true happiness for the winners takes a lot of grace!

we don't do it to be obnoxious, were just being supportive of all the other teams in our gym. other gyms do the exact same thing, i don't take offense to it. its not bad sportsmanship and when we lose we always stand up and congratulate the team that won :)

truee, i know we dont do it to be obnoxious, but IMHO i just think it would make me upset if i was on the 2nd, 3rd, etc... team :) our gym has very good sportmanship though. :)
