All-Star Ripped Off Dances?

I have to add that just because all of us recognize this dance in a heart beat does not necessarily mean the crowd or judges did. You have to remember this is HS cheer. Speaking from my experience not that many hs cheerleaders know all that much about allstar. Its pretty much only me and 1 other girl on my team that follow it. All they know are the local gyms. I personally don't think that many people involved with that school knew it was a reused dance. I hope that made sense.

cant cheer athletics sue for copyright law because that team is using their music? are cheer mixes copyrighted? i thought they didn't release their music...that's just weird.

So what would you say about this? We had a allstar coach at a big gym (who is also a choreographer) who wanted to give our Senior Level 4 coed team a recycled dance that he originally gave to his high school team.

No, I don't think they would have a case there. That's getting into a whole different issue, since original artists of songs aren't paid for their music to be used in the mix.

It happens a lot in cheerleading unfortunately. If you have a problem with it, bring it up to the choreographer. Because he's allowed to give you what ever kind of dance he wants. Doesn't mean he's right, but, like I said, it's allowed. I would speak with him about it.

i understand why choreographers give teams the same dances, i mean a high school team isn't ever gonna compete against world cup shooting stars, but at the same time if i was the coach (which obviously the coach was OK with this) i would have a problem with this, because if i am paying someone to come and choreograph a routine for me, im not paying for something that i could have found on youtube. I mean don't get me wrong that dance is great! But IMO i wouldnt want to pay for it, if i could have learned 80% of my counts on youtube...Or at least give them some new music, dont make it THAT obvious.

If there actually was ownership, then it would belong to the person who bought it. However, I think it would be very difficult to prove any type of ownership when it comes to cheerleading choreography.

you cant really own motions either.

I'm sorry, let me clarify....he was the coach of the big gym sr level 4 team, as well as the choreographer for the same team. He wanted to give them a dance he previously choreographed for a high school team (hs team competed with the dance).

And I can honestly say I kind of see how a choreographer could repeat some stuff. Sit back and think about all the teams a big name choreographer does in 1 year. A LOT. Imagine coming up with that many entirely different routines in only a few days. If they used one before that's super good and are maybe having a mental block on new material that day, they might pull from it. Not saying I agree or disagree, I just see how it could happen.

As I posted earlier...I believe Jamie did the original WCSS dance...and then he ALSO did the South routine. It was the year AFTER Stars performed the dance. My guess is that since he did the original, he got the OK from WC to "recycle" it for South when he their routine as well. Not saying it isn't a little cheesy, but probably not as shady as just some high school team "stealing" WCSS's dance. Both teams had their routine done by Jamie. That being said, I am SURE a couple of those kids on South knew where the dance came from because they were on Rays and went to Worlds...so I am sure they knew it was WC's dance. That may have been weird to perform a dance you saw just a few months earlier haha. Anyway, at least they did it pretty well and earned a good spot at State!

Back on track...I don't know if I would consider this "stealing" WCSS's dance since the routines were done by the same person.

"taking" someones dance is the equivalent of "taking" triple toe backs from another team. maybe the south girls wanted this to be their dance?

At two grand a dance, they better be coming up with some new stuff.
