Can't find the gymnastics threads so just going to proclaim my excitement here... Laurie Hernandez was added to the national team after January's camp!! Love her. Really excited to watch her in the coming years.

I love her too! Her floor is amazing. I really hope USAG puts up videos from the camp. I saw Bailie Key got first in AA for seniors? I'm excited to see how everyone looks

School in both my CPs' districts have already canceled for tomorrow AND Wednesday. My oldest is a senior and I can't remember school ever canceling more than one day in advance.
I'm re-evaluating the need to go to the grocery store lol
We're not canceled yet for tomorrow but our district likes to wait until 5AM....as I was typing this I just got the phone call that they are canceled for tomorrow and tbd for Wednesday. My oldest took a midterm today and had another one scheduled for Friday, but that has been changed to next week and she is now off the rest of this week.

Same (about the snow sadly, not the puppy). In Southern Maine they're getting a fair amount more snow than I am supposed to be getting. I'm not entirely sure if where I go to school is considered "upstate" NY exactly (Is Albany considered upstate? I'm kinda close to that...), but I could really use a few snow days...

Yes. Albany is upstate. However, because they are more used to a heavier snowfall they might not cancel classes as quickly as they would here on long island or in the city.
Lol I would never have considered Albany upstate, but that's because I'm from Rochester. We don't think anything except Rochester, Syracuse, and Buffalo are actually "upstate NY." [emoji12]

But definitely agreed that they're probably pretty used to heavier snowfall. I wouldn't hold my breath for a snow day, but maybe you'll get one! Fingers crossed for you...

So I'm taking an American history class here (Ironic right?), and the professor said when he visited Times Square he was surprised that nobody was chanting USA USA because apparently thats what we do? He also suggested that we print out a map of the US and hang it above our desk so that we can look at it because we don't understand the sheer size of America and if you don't know the geography of the United States you might struggle in the class. I tried so hard not to laugh the entire time.
I'm apologising on behalf of people who attended Welsh Universities...we don't all believe this! Your lecturer sounds erm...well informed?

We talked about Ferguson so at least his sort of informed? I was drinking a bottle of coke when he was talking about American consumerism and how everyone buys into it even if you don't live in America and he was pointing out things in the classroom including said bottle of coke. I didn't talk in that class today so as far as he knows I'm not American but in my head all I could think of was of course I've given into American consumerism. I'm American.
I hope the class does continue with deeper discussions like Ferguson, and less coke shaming.

Does he get all of his information about the US off of Tumblr and Reddit? Please tell me he has visited more places in the US than just Times Square... It is not an accurate portrayal of any part of America except Times Square. (Though I guess you could argue it is a very accurate portrayal of the U.S. as a whole depending on what you're talking about. )

Albany is right next to Massachusetts lol! I have never thought of it as upstate either.

I giggled at this...was he there on July 4th? That's the only time anyone would've ever been chanting USA. If then.

I don't think I've ever chanted USA! in my life. I'd be very interested on an outsiders view of American history though.

Especially from the Welsh point of view - they don't show up too much in our history as much as other countries do. It'd be different if it was from France's, England's, or even African or Middle Eastern POV. Or Native American or the people who used to live in Hawaii before the U.S. took it over. I'd love to see American History from their POV.

If you want one I could give you one since I took US History when I lived there for a year.
I definitely got a different viewpoint on WWII. Most awkward hours of my life: watching Schindler's list during that class.

Totally random math question here, but does anyone know what happens when you square a cube root? Like (x+7)^1/3)^2
Would that make it (x+7)^2/3? And if so, where do you go from there?! I think there's at least one person that majored in math on the board... So if you could help it would be greatly appreciated!

Do you want to get rid of the ^2/3 (which is right btw)? Then you have to apply ( )^3/2 to both sides of your equation to get rid of it.

I'm essentially trying to evaluate a limit as x is approaching 1, and the denominator is (x+7)^1/3 - 2, which wouldn't work out, so I'm just trying to get rid of the roots somehow. It's actually written as √ with a 3 in the front, not actually as an exponent, if that matters, I just don't know how to do a cube root sign on my phone.

Eta: fixed the expression
