I feel like after you go once, there is always that question as to whether you are young enough/good enough to make another go at it.

The average Olympic gymnast is like 15/16. Four years later you're 19/20. In elite gymnast years, that's 50.

That and you have to ask yourself if you want to go out on top or try to make a #strugglerun for the next Olympic year. Like Nastia.

The reality who TRULY expected McKayla to try to make it to Rio, let alone make it? The suspense of her return wasn't exactly killing me. She hasn't competed since, what, Worlds 2013? I still follow her on instagram from 2012 and although her instagram isn't necessarily indicative of where her head was at regarding her career....it also didn't indicate she was interested in gym as much as she is in the acting....posting pictures of herself trying to be sexy/seductive aspect of her life. She also...was an event specialist...and that's not what the team needs or can take anymore

So this announcement is a formality and a confirmation of that which we already knew.

She had a great career...Godspeed girl.

I'm all for the 2012 girls dropping out (the iffy ones...not Aly or Gabby)...because watching Nastia/Bridget/Alicia and Shawn trying to make comebacks 4 years ago was just sad and heartbreaking. These new crop of younger girls are just that good. This isn't the 90's/early 2000's anymore....nobody is going to have a Dominique Dawes/Shannon Miller career... it just isn't going to happen. Not with the depth of talent here

The men's team however.... Jesus fix it.

That was a very interesting interview to listen to; nothing she said came off as that surprising, but I'll be shocked to see her in any real gymnastics role from this point on. I think she has definitely bit off the entire hand, foot, and head of the people who fed her.

Ya honestly with Maroney, I feel like she announced her retirement now to hop on this sudden bandwagon. I feel like she's been irrelevant for awhile now. I find it hard to believe that anyone was actually holding out hope for her to make it to Rio. But good to know it's official now, I guess?

This interview was filmed in October and had set date to be released so it's not like omg to much attetion is on Kayla I need some attetion on me.

I also find it really interesting about her whole training sistem (no smiling during comps, no music, not allowed to talk, fake injuries, injuries blamed on weight gain, ...) I would love to find more about how gymnast train especally about russian.

Mckayla was always my favorite fierce five and I am glad to see her happy.

I just wanted her to get the Olympic Gold Vault medal she should have gotten. That's all.

In any other country, you can pull 2, sometimes 3 Olympics (unless you're Ponor or Chusovitna- in which case you compete until you feel like you want to be done, then come back later). Only for the US women do I feel like you're so limited.

@ErinS to be fair, Bridget never left. She competed at the 2009 and 2010 Worlds and then basically was injured 24/7. She's killin it at Florida though.

She is (I watched her meet the other day )

But she still tried to come back for 2012. Failed to come back. It was sad.

What she's doing at Florida present day isn't relevant to my statement.

I mean Alicia Sacramone competed at Worlds 2011 and wasn't on the team for the 2012 Olympics.

All this does is illustrate my point that the depth of talent coming up behind them is just that good and it's still just that good for 2016.

It doesn't matter if they took breaks (I e Gabby/Aly) or competed consistently during the 4 years (Kyla). Again i do think Aly/Gabby will make this year's Olympic team but In the event they don't it'd still the same sadness if Kyla had stuck around and tries to make it and didn't.

That's fair. I wish the teams were still six people, ha.

Who do you think will be the Rio team for USA? My guess is Simone, Gabby, Aly, Maggie, Norah

I'll be interested to see if Kocian can up her game on another apparatus or two. She's very good on bars, but not quite as dominant as McKayla was on vault to punch her ticket as a specialist (despite being the reigning World Champion). If she can contribute strongly somewhere else I think her experience might get her selected.

My definites right now are Simone and Gabby. Maggie and Aly are probables, I think they've got a little to prove in the next few months. That fifth spot is a total toss up to me, lol. Stiff competition between Madison, Bailie, and the standout rising juniors (Jazmyn, Laurie, Norah)

Well remember, had McKayla not been freaking broken (did you see that interview yesterday? so sad.) she would have contributed on floor as well. (Dat 3.5 twist tho :cheering:) (Which would have left Jordyn and Aly as the only all-arounders...funny how life works, eh?)

I don't think Gabby is a lock, per se--I think Marta could be using the American Cup as the Maggie/Gabby showdown and going with whoever is the higher all-around scorer. If Maggie had done the bars she did in the worlds qualifying that she did in the team final she would have bumped Gabby out of the all-around final because of two per country. I think Marta realizes she goofed up with the worlds qualifying lineup (going with Aly over Maggie for the all-around) and wants a re-do in the form of the American Cup.

I'm just so excited to see what Simone Biles does in the way of upgrades. I also want to give her a hug and maybe be her best friend.

^^^I'm on this train. Barring the obvious horror, I think you've got it. Depends on the next few meets/showings.

ETA: I've never seen a line-up trashed that badly in Worlds. Jeez.

ETA2: I'm also depressed Maroney never got a named element like she could have.
