Just registered for my first pre req.(A & P 1) Been trying to get this class for a month. Someone must have dropped leaving the spot open for me. Nervous and excited. Would love to do an accelerated program but not sure if I could swing the not working part. Not to mention the cheer season that year. First things first though.

I did an accelerated program. Had I not commuted 140 miles each day I could have worked. If you focus on your pre-reqs and get the basics down, nursing school is not quite so difficult. It is still a huge time commitment, but building blocks are the key to avoiding all-nighters and crazy stress. I highly recommend the accelerated program. I loved mine!

I just graduated from an accelerated program here in FL. I personally did not work a full time job throughout the program because I knew I myself personally would not be able to handle that. I nannied throughout the week for maybe 8-10hr max just to have some extra money. I had friends in the program though that did work full time and managed to get through things. They struggled a bit but still able to get through. Personally I think it's all on what you can handle. Academically it wasn't that the material required you to study for endless hours a day it was more so all the assignments and clinical rotations that took up our time.

I have 12 years experience in ICU nursing, the first 5 in bone marrow transplant and the past 7 in NICU. I can tell you working with premature babies is by far the best nursing experience I have ever had. Don't hesitate to reach out if you are interested in working with preemies and are looking for advice.

Here's the thing with an accelerated program. I'm 45 years old with 2 kids who have place to be. Its not only the working I'm concerned with. Its working part time nights ( I already work ina hospital overnights doing phlebotomy and tests and patient care), time to study AND time for the actual schooling. I'm taking it moment by moment however.

I was born premature, 24 weeks at that. So this hits a soft spot for me, being a nurs3 in the NICU is one of my dreams :)

Im a nurse. Graduated 2 and a half yrs ago. I originally graduated Pre-Med but rather than pursue med school i felt nursing was a better fit with a huge range of areas you can bounce around in, bedside, management, research, home health, case management, education. I love my job, it's a nice balance in dealing with older sick people and then coaching young healthy kids. I have 2 years ICU experience and recently had to make a move to another floor to get into a full time position for my benefits. I'm now working on a floor specializing in Renal/Peritoneal dialysis and Geriatrics. I am currently in a bridge program for my masters to obtain my nurse practitioners license. Overall the career is very rewarding, very stressful at times, but very rewarding nonetheless . For those in school for nursing, I highly recommend NCLEX practice questions regularly it will be a huge help once it comes time to study for those boards! If you get down don't give up on yourself you will make it through. Best of Luck to everyone in this thread Current and Future nurses!

I did close to 4,000 NCLEX questions in preparation for testing. My computer turned off at 75 and I cried all the way home thinking I failed.
I did an accelerated program that was 18 months. Some students worked part time with no problems. One girl actually worked full time evenings as a waitress and passed but she had a photographic memory.
My 1st job out of nursing school was in NICU. Did that for 2 years before I burned out and was in the bathroom crying every shift. I float there now but will never do it full time again. There is a specific sound a parent makes when their child passes and if I never hear it again it will be to soon. I prefer my nice, easy paced ortho floor.

Oh and I did not work during nursing school but I did have 3 kids, two of which I had while doing pre reqs. We lived in family housing in campus until I got into the program and then we lived with my in laws until I graduated.

Thought if there were other fierceboarders on here looking into becoming a nurse/or is already a nurse could have our own little thread to talk about the whole experience. I'm applying to nursing school next spring (spring 2015) to get my rn license, then going to get my bsn. Hopefully those of you who are nurses/are in nursing school can give us hopefuls some insight as to what nursing school, clinicals, homework, everything there is to know about your nursing school! :)
I'm a nurse (labor and delivery) and I've done everything from OBGYN office to large quaternary care center. Any questions, just ask!!

Thank you so much for this thread! I am currently a senior and have just finished applying to my schools. Due to the overwhelming out of state costs of $40,000+, depending on if I get any scholarships or not, community college might be the best route to get my pre-reqs done. We will see how everything works out!

In your experiences in the NICU did you work with or come in contact with a child life specialist at all?

Good to hear! I'm an aspiring child life specialist about to graduate/intern/certify hopefully so it's great to get perspectives on all accounts. I'm doing my practicum now and I'm already seeing the wonderful impact! It's really great. Also. Praise god for you nurses!

It takes a special person to be a child life specialist. As a parent you are nervous and anxious when your child is in the hospital or certain clinical settings. It's fantastic to have someone step in and help relieve the job of getting your child comfortable with what's going on.
