The only thing I'm not happy about with the wc bids is that they are changing how they are picking to move on. We were all told in the beginning of the season that all wc bids have to compete on Friday and only the first place team would move on to the next round. So based on that we made a decision to not accept. Now they are saying that they will take more than just the first place team. Not very happy about that.

Really? Where did you see/hear that????

I heard (and I think we both probably heard it from the same place) that only certain divisions (super small ones) were going to take more than first place.

@coach12, I have to agree with you on the parameters laid out for w/c bids, it seems someone came up with a grand idea and others co-signed on the idea and now they are all doing big back strokes against that idea...I think, all they had to do is have the At-Large bids start on Friday-prelims and cut down the number of teams advancing to semis and then have finals on Sunday, thus eliminating the need for w/c bids...I know, I know, it will be too much like the layout they already have for Worlds, but if that layout works why recreate the wheel...

Summit is not Worlds, though. At larges and paids start on Saturday and both At Larges and Paids have to make Sunday.

Oh, @notyourcheermom, are you sure Summit is not World? (Sarcasm) I know the 2 are different, but what I was trying to say is with w/c bids, many of those teams did not them in the same manner as the At-Large and Paid bids, which many of the w/c bids were given out at 1 day competitions, not the same intensity of a 2 day events... what I recalled at Worlds many of the At-Large bid teams started on Friday, which they had prelims and those 20 teams moved to Semis with the Paid bids and finally, Finals... Why should Summit be any different?

This all smacks of decisions being made by $$$. I am sure you have people complaining it's not fair. If you have a set of rules you stick to them. People made decisions to accept or not accept based on those rules. They new what the odds were. If you want to change them do it next year before the season starts.

I was also wondering, if people are so concerned about Worlds athletes crossing down levels to compete at Summit, why not have Worlds and Summit happening simultaneously as culminating cheerleading competitions and move Summit to a different location than Disney....hmmm!

Well, yeah, Varsity is a for-profit company.

I would love this, but then you get the problem with coaches not being able to be at both. I'm sure there are plenty coaches that coach Worlds teams and lower levels.

But this doesn't really address the rest of his post, which is very valid. It's also very typical of Varsity to change rules for things mid-season, after people have already agreed to the original rules, but typical or not, it's a valid complaint.

Personally, I agree with people that wc bids make it less "best of the best." I think that's what happened with US Finals too - I mean really, how hard is it to get a bid to that? Pretty much just declare that you want to go, and you can go.

I feel that way about most of these things. I've always been a fan of the idea of having to win a few things building up to a big national win (state, regional, then you can go on), but I know that will never happen.

For now, I'm still super impressed with a Summit win. I think in a few years it will be less impressive.

I wish I had the energy to compare with prior years. We had fewer bids available locally this year. Something like 3 bids (1 paid, 2 AL) were replaced with 2 wild card bids. Every year the Summit has become more difficult to secure bids.

Eta: also, another bid comp we attend is only offering bids for use next season. So, that's four more taken from this season!

I agree on that, but I know at my daughter's gym, every Worlds team Coach, who also coaches lower level teams, many, if not most, have Assistant Coaches that are doing more of the day to day work with the team and also travel with the lower level team when the coach for the Worlds level team is away with that team or at a different competition.... But maybe it is naiveté of me to think is not like that at every gym...

It would be silly to expect a gym to split up and go to two different HUGE, Season-culminating competitions the same weekend. A coach shouldn't have to choose between their teams.

And I know a lot of EPs work at worlds. USASF's staff isn't big enough. Varsity needs to have staff at worlds and the summit.

So i am assuming that those divisions with just one WC team will automatically make it to Saturday. Do they even need to compete at that point on Friday?
