A gym in our area (Pinnacle) announced they were closing down yesterday as of May 9. They use to be the gym in San Antonio and then lost a lot of athletes and have been small gym the last few years.

Although they have been competing small gym they have actually done really well.
All their teams have a summit bid and they have probably won most every thing all year long in the small gym division so I was really expecting them to be a large gym this coming season. They had 3 locations when I got here and 2 that weren't as popular have closed down previously but the main location is soo nice. I'm just really surprised by this like I'm really in shock.

I wish I could say that I am in shock, but I am not. I think before this summer is over the amount of gyms that have closed or ended up merging to stave off closure will be be bigger than ever before. Numerous issue to be sure and I don't think winning/not winning is one of those reasons.

I heard it was completely financial and maybe I'm dumb and naive and don't know the sides of business but I thought by getting rid of their less than popular locations so saving money there and the fact that they are really good and growing again that they could make the needed money from all these potential athletes. I would of almost bet money that they were going to grow back into large gym this season like they used to be many years ago.

I did hear the 2 coaches that came in the past 2 years and turned that program around are going to try to open their own program but I have not heard details on that yet and they said they won't likely be released till after the summit but I'm just surprised.

I would say that financials are the number one reason behind gyms closing. You can't deposit trophies and banners in the bank, and marketing of them only goes so far. You cant scholarship athletes (intentionally just to have a level 5 team or unintentionally when the parent(s) just wont pay) for so many years without it coming back to haunt you. The industry costs keep going up. Many owners don't even take paychecks trying to keep the business they love afloat. Great coaches and choreographers that have no clue how to work the back end of the business, but because they want to be the one in charge, wont let anyone help them run it either. The stories I hear are so sad, but always seems to boil down to someone being asleep at the business wheel more than not winning competitions.

You definitely know what you're talking about. It all makes sense!

Just saw this morning about Pinnacle. I was sad. Their teams did awesome and always showed great sportsmanship.

Yes, with Rockstar acquiring Elite, and Powerhouse Elite opening up in RTP (which is run by those amazing Powerhouse tumbers and coaches). And maybe other gyms opening satellite locals and other small gyms closing-it is very interesting cheer wise in the Triangle right now.

To set the record straight... :) 100% locally owned and operated...

Elite Cheer and Dance Inc. is excited to announce we are joining the Rockstar Cheer & Dance Family!

Effective for season 14 Elite Cheer and Dance will become Rockstar Raleigh.

As a Rockstar franchise we will now be able to collaborate on business systems, choreography, music, training and much more that will help take our program to a higher level.

We are confident that by joining Rockstar we can grow and improve our products and services. Rockstar Raleigh will remain 100% locally owned and operated as we join the Rockstar Brands.

Saw a facebook post that makes me think Cheer Athletics may have an announcement on the way.

Can you give a link or any more information? I'm so curious now!!
Me too! Particularly since we have absolutely zero plans to open/acquire/buy/merge/takeover/franchise a new facility in 2015.

We are focused on improving our internal systems (accounting, communications, infrastructure, etc.) before expanding any further. Going from 1 gym to 4, adding a corporate HQ, adding a surprisingly large manufacturing business, and hiring 50+ new employees in a two-year span has been quite the learning experience.
