I was just wondering if anyone new on here how BBM works.

I have a blackberry and obviously the idea of using it is that its free to talk to people rather than using text messages. I live in England, and if a was to go to the US would its still be free to use? or if a BBM'd someone abroad from england would i be charged?

Just thinking that when go to worlds if it is free would be a cheap way to contact people over there.

If anyway has a clue about this help would be gratley appreciated. thanks

BBM goes through the Blackberry exchange server so it works for everyone on a blackberry regardless of cell phone carrier.

All you need is the Blackberry PIN number in order to chat with them. It may require acceptance if they have it set up that way. I just switched from my Blackberry, so I never tried it with anyone overseas, but I would assume it works the same way. You can try to chat with other Fierceboarders to see if it will work though.

Here is a thread about a BBM group that was started a while back. Good luck:

Just be careful, because if it uses your data plan, and then you use data in another country, they might charge you international data roaming charges - which can be crazy expensive. You might want to check with your carrier.

Definitely free. My sister travelled abroad to Europe this summer and that's how she kept in touch with us because it would have been too expensive to text and call daily.

I have one, and all I can verify is that if you make foreign friends and you have unlimited data, then BBM is free! I have friends in Canada and one in Ireland. all free to BBM because of unlimited data! They MIGHT charge roaming, it depends on your carrier!

I have bbm and this past summer traveled to europe. The only thing that was expensive to do was download or send files or anything on the internet. I called verizon and they explained all the over seas charges and what not.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I have just gone into the Orange shop which is my network provider and they said they would charge £10 for every MB or something like that. In other worlds its not free

and very expensive. ah well. Thanks for everyone's help!

Check your plan. Sometimes you can get a plan that includes unlimited data. Plans over here like that are about $70 or L50

Yeah but unlimited data won't be free and unlimited in another country. I have an iPhone with unlimited data but when I went to Mexico I had to have it in airplane mode all week or pay crazy roaming charges.

She's already in Europe. Just saying to check on that. Not sure how European "unimited roaming" or "unlimited data" plans work, but I know getting unlocked phones and swapping SIM cards while you are traveling is pretty common.
