All-Star Suggestions For Improving Scoring

I recall having the conversation, but would have to revisit it to recall the details. I don't believe many implementable ideas were generated from it.
Basically, the premise was to set a score for a specific skill. But, this was met with much disdain.

So, how about listing skills as A,B,C, and so on. Then designate a score for each level skill and execution of skill. Then train the judges to specifically judge to that standard and BAM judging is taken care of.

I would also have judges pay a certification fee. This may get rid of some of the coaches that judge just to see their competitor.

I knew after I put that, this question would be asked! :)

I will admit I am not a coach or owner, I just gathered from the boards that accountability in the judging department appears to be an issue. To what extent scores need to be more visible (from more detailed breakdowns down to individual judges' scoresheets being shown to all teams), I have no idea. It jut seems if scores were more visible it may lead to more accountability. To be honest I haven't thought through potential unintended consequences by making scores more available.
Was the way Worlds did it, showing totals for Building, Tumbling, Dance, and Deductions enough?
Showing partial information is JUST as bad as showing no information. It leads to false conclusions.

Simply put, NO. How does a coach know what to work on in such general terms? Maybe jumps was the difference, maybe baskets, but, we just don't know until you have each category broken down.

The consensus so far seems to be line of the score sheet needs to be public. Objections?

No objection...I want to see breakdowns of every teams scores. Just seeing their overall score doesn't help me help my team.

No objection, it's so frustrating to have to guess why you lost. I'd like to see more judges at an event. I feel like there's less room for error and less room for one judges bias to effect the score if there were more people. Maybe do it like gymnastics does and throw out the highest and lowest score. That might get really complicated though...

1. Please expand on this thought, keeping in mind it needs to be applied to groups of people performing different skills at the same time.

2. Would my difficulty score be based the sum of my routine having X 1-point skills, plus Y 2-point skills, plus z 3-point skills?

3. It would also get rid of some people I think you would want to keep. I'd probably be ok doing the first competition for free in return for someone covering the expense of the certification and training, but I'm not sure I would go for significant up front cost in order judge.

Having everyone on the same system would be an even better start IMO.

Agreed, annual training if you have to train 7 different scoresheets seems counter productive.

More coaches don't want details public than do.

(NCA didn't ask)

It would be nice to know who these coaches are and why they feel they have to hide their scores. I feel that there should be nothing to hide if the scores are valid and well documented.

It is also possible it is all in how you ask the question.

1. Do you mind if we release your scores to your competitors?

2. We want to release a breakdown of everyones scores in the division per category. No one will see comments, but you will be able to see how well each section that you performed will score against the other teams in your division. Would you like this?

Its a start, but not direct enough. If you give them the option, as Andre said, most don't want to do it. So the answer may just be a no, than we're back to square one.

Again, what is the reasoning behind NOT wanting the scores released to others? I haven't heard that argument yet.
