I have actually seen this before and the reason for not accepting the athlete was because she simply was too big.
She could out jump and tumble all the girls but because she was not the "ideal" size they did not take her and she was so upset.

Since it is the high school level could you sue over discrimination? I know College can turn you down for any reason, but you would think High School couldn't get away with this.

I think you can sue but im not sure

Trying out for high school is a tricky thing. I know girls who should've made varsity put on jv but someone with no cheer experience at all put on varsity. It's all a popularity contest and what connections you have. You can be the best and still not make it. I feel bad for your friend bu it seems like she's too good for a high school team in the first place!

What's the point if they can pick anyone they want? Even if a lawsuit is won, what do you gain? The team didn't want this individual so it's not likely the individual would be happy cheering for a team that really didn't want her. Unless someone can even prove something was said that would be considered disriminitory in the first place. But then again, what's to gain?

IMO, if you're an all-star cheerleader, you're an athlete that wants to compete. Not somebody that just waves poms on the sideline. These are athletes driven by competition and are highly skilled technicians in their sport.

HS cheer not for everybody. Not making the team might be the best thing if all they're looking is for a crowd pleaser with a certain look and aren't competitive but rather there to pep up their teams. This way, the focus can be on competitive cheer where skill is what maters.

Besides, if the HS teams are a train wreck, they're gonna need more than cheerleaders to make them any decent.

I see your point. It is just that discrimination is not right. If someone standsup to them, then maybe the next girls who try out will be treated better. I agree though, all star is awesome!

All I can say is i'm glad we have not had to experience that. My daughter cheers for a HIGHLY competitive High School squad as well as competes against alot of HIGHLY competitive schools. It's sad that some Schools still do things this way but honestly all I can think of is it's life, sometimes you just gotta roll with the punches.

There could be a million things that effected he placement on this team. Anything from grades, motions, jumps, dance, even the tone or pitch of your voice. Were they really discriminating because she's not the smallest? I know it's hard to do with a friend, but you might have to take an objective perspective. Anyways...she should be focusing on Allstar

well...how much larger? Are you trying to say her weight was a factor, like she wouldn't look good on the floor and thats why she didn't make the team?
i dont know because honestly shes AMAZING! thats what she thinks and alot of others...

I dont think that should matter. You see larger girls all the time in allstar and they can the same or even better than girls who the size of toothpicks
haha I KNOW AGREED:) for sure...im the toothpick on the team im more taller and ya know?
