I'd rather someone sing their music, rather than slap a big smile on the face. Anybody can smile, but when you sing the music and look excited doing it, it brings the routine and music to life. The thing I hate about just smiling, is that they start to fade, look constipated, fake, or bored. So SING CHILDREN SING!!!!!!

Hahaha constipated! I know what you mean! Whenever my CP just smiles throughout the routine she looks very fake and nervous...i think ill emphasis singing to the music to her! Hopefully that helps :)

I am still laughing about the constipated face because i am picturing it in my head ;)

@borntotumble if your gym is stuck on big facials, have your daughter do A, E, I, O, U facials...Smiling looks better and gives better photos, but it's all in what your gyms wants..

Come on coaches! There is nothing that I love better than a fierce mini shimmy! ;)
But seriously, as a parent, I thank you. There is nothing harder than explaining to the ER doctor, why your 6 year old has a concussion...

i should clarify- i do have a Mini that does a little hands on the hips, hair whip, shimmy thing at the end of her last pass... she made it up herself and i just couldn't say no to her- it's so cute. but my fliers shimming in a stunt? no way :)

I think that when my daughter sings the music it settles her down. All she does is sing lol!

I think it depends on the smile..if you smile just for the sake of smiling, it's going to look forced because your mind is focusing on other things/emotions which will supersede the smile when you're not actively focusing on it. Smiling while thinking 'Oh god oh god I hate this part oh god please hit your stunt PLEASE hit this don't crash on me again'- yeah, the nervous will take over and make your smile look like a creepy grimace. If you are confident enough, a good smile and a sassy wink (Ok, maybe I'm the only one who occasionally winks sassily at anybody) are all you need. If you can't fake it, singing helps lol Although I don't want it to look like it's turning into a lip-sync contest..

I'm guilty of the sassy wink. The hubs coaches high school (not cheer) and when he's on the sidelines and I'm up in the stands I'll give him the "cheer wink" (he always turns around to look up in the stands during halftime)...never fails to make him crack up.

Haha, so my daughter could really never do facials because she would concentrate to hard on them. About a month ago I noticed she started doing them and they are so horrible they are cute. I cant really record her at a competition because I record the team as a whole so its hard to notice on a video but either tonight or Thursday I will try to record her at practice so i can focus the camera only on her so y'all can have a good laugh!!
