Education is run by the states and their government and not the federal government. So different states do things differently. In NY public schools are funded by tax dollars and if you own property or a residence in a district, you pay taxes to that school even if your child does not attend. My parents own a house in the district I went to and a vacation house in another district and unfortunately pay for both. States also choose what kind of testing and programs they make students take. We took Regents tests at the end of each year given by the state to prove we learned certain subjects. Other states don't take anything or take something similar. For school lunches, ours was 2$ when I graduated two years ago and that included a lot. If your parents made less than a certain amount of money, you got free or reduced lunch. Sorry this is such a late post but I figured if you were curious it was some extra detail for you!I got the point! funny how different we live here. School and college is for free. We used to have free lunch in high school for 5 years but we don't have anymore. But probably primary school kids will have free lunches at school soon. And students has some lunch sales. We pay around $3 for lunch, salad, drink and dessert. Students and school kids have really cheap public transport and I pay around $190 dollars for my own student apartment (not dorms) becuase country pays the rest of it. (kinda) But I am still poor as hell!!
