Hi everyone
I just wanted to ask this particular question as I am interested if this is the case in most us gyms especially smaller gyms.

I unfortunatley am not cheering this year as all the gyms I tried out for didn't have that policy but want to see if it applies to any other gym

As far as I know, if you have a heartbeat, there is a team for you in the US...

I am so sorry to hear you are not cheering this season, but did the teams you tryout for recommend what you need to do next season to be a successful candidate. Maybe use the downtime to take more tumbling classes and go to open gyms etc...

As long as there is a team that meets the age requirement, I've never heard of someone getting turned away from a team. It may not be the team that is desired, but a spot somewhere will be found.

I believe @BlueCat has mentioned a few times that occasionally a Cheer Athletics gym fills up entirely. (During the season, not for tryouts. No spots available on any team for someone who comes in after tryouts.) Obviously that's a huge testament to their success.

Most gyms have a policy that if you show up to tryouts (and pay), you'll be placed on a team. Not necessarily guaranteed after tryouts but in most occasions they will try to find a spot for you.

most gyms i've encountered have this policy for senior (and younger) aged athletes who tryout during the gym's scheduled tryouts. if you come later in the season, some gyms are more accommodating than others, but more often than not they will do what they can to keep you in the gym and get your $$.

after 18+, it's a different world. some gyms may field an open team and take you no matter your skill level, some may be more competitive and have stricter requirements, and depending on team size they may have no choice but to turn you away.

Basically my tumbling is not up to par and flexibilty isnt great for jumps the problem is I live in a rural area the nearest cheer gym now I have moved is 100 miles away I was happy to make that commitment because I love cheer. There are no open gyms or tumbling classes for me to attend to get better.

A couple of the teams were lovely and have really helped me even one offereing me a place in their classes but I am bitter as the is one team so fixated on winning they were willing to cut people and have cross overs instead which I am annoyed as their training was great.

However my circumstances have changed and should be nearer a different set of gyms by november and will see about classes then. I chose not to cheer at university this year due to an injury and I am leaving soon so it isnt fair on the girls

That might work out perfectly then. If you move closer to a gym, you can spend the rest of this season doing tumbling and open gym and then you'll kill it at tryouts for next season! Good luck.

It is possible for you to tryout at our gym and not make a team. I know for the ones they didn't place on a team this year were offered spots on half year teams when those teams started.

We do it if the athlete doesn't have the qualifications for a team but it is usually unlikely that this happens.

I have heard that other gyms in the area have turned kids away/ not placed everyone on teams because they didn't want to come out of all the small gym divisions and couldn't go over that magical number.

I am still going to be at least an hour from a gym but it's better than nothing. I am currently trying to change unis so if I get where I want to go I will be in the distance of some high calibre teams which will be great.

As I am 20 tumbling is hard but once my back is sorted I'm going to work front tuck again as I find free flips so much easier as my back doesn't like to bend. I am hoping to get a round off for next season so then I work skills from it.

I am hoping now to do what I did last year and find a team after the regionals in February when a lot leave and compete in July.

The small issue is what bit me in the bum in the uk senior 2 is massive so is always split into small and large. The large division is usually dominated by 2 teams and very competitive for 3rd and the placing after so a lot of teams want to stay in small with hope of winning as it much less predictable who will win. The team really wanted to win before raising their level for the 15/16 season so are staying in small and utilising crossovers so they get the tumble score. They said in tryouts they were going to be tactical but they had gymnastics coaches coming in to take tumble class and was excited to learn from them oh well hopefully I will be placed next year on a team

It's not so much team division size but here in the U.S. We have gym size divisions.
If you can have 75 or less athletes (I think that's the number) that are members of your gym then you can compete in a small gym division at a lot of comps and only compete against gyms with 75 or less kids. Generally this small gym division encompasses a lot of new gyms or gyms just starting out so these other gyms take the best 75 kids they can get and build teams basically to stay competitive and eat everyone alive.

I don't think that is right but people will do whatever it takes to win. I love to win but only when it is deserved like I got 3rd with my old team at nationals we knew due to the high calibre of the teams we weren't going to win but we were so happy to even place top three. Winning isn't the be all and end all surely if the team has fun and does their best it doesn't matter what division they are in.

At (I think) all gyms in my state make a spot for anyone since we are not a huge cheer state. But there are gyms in my state who will cut off tryouts after a certain time in the year and not accept people to tryout until the next season.

All of the gyms I know of around me will have a spot for everyone - someone may want level 4 and get put on level 3, etc., but even kids w/ no cheer experience will get placed on a team (almost all gyms have level 1 and/or 2 teams capable of taking kids of varying ages - which I feel is a really good thing). After tryouts it can be even harder to get your team of first choice, but still most programs can find room for you up till almost the first competition.

I'm sorry that you aren't able to cheer this year - there must be a really low supply of cheer gyms compared to athletes who want to cheer where you are. Hopefully you can find a way to work on your skills to get ready for next year - like are they looking for everyone to come in w/ a certain level of tumbling or stunting skill where you are?
