Okay, so I really want to cheer in college. But my parents want me to go to a really good school with good academics. Not to say that state schools don't, but they would prefer that I don't go to a state school unless it has something REALLY special to offer me, because I could stay here and get half off of tuition to Mizzou if I'm going to a state school. So I'm trying to find a school that I can cheer at. I'm not an AMAZING tumbler, I'm working on my full as a sophomore so I should have it by the time I'm trying out for college...
I've looked at all the typical "smart kid" schools, like Princeton, Yale, Harvard , etc, but people aren't really going to those schools for athletics, they're more going for academics... some of these squads are like "tumbling isn't required" which I don't want, or they're non competing, which I could do but only if there's a gym near me! Vanderbilt seems good, it's known for academics but their cheer requirements are level 4/5 which is what I want, I found some others too but I don't remember them...
I know I'm only a sophomore and I don't need worry about college so much so early, but I like to know what I need to get tumbling/stunting wise in advance so I have time to work on it. So does anyone have suggestions of colleges that have good cheer squads but are known for academics too?
Also I don't know what I want to do so I need a school that would give me a lot of options!

Purdue, maybe? They go to UCA Nationals and have Coed and All Girl. Requirements are about the same for both: standing tuck, standing bhs to tuck, and running tuck. Watched a video of the all girl and for running about half did tucks and half did fulls.
Or maybe Louisville or Clemson. Clemson gives scholarships to everyone! And All Girl only requires standing BHS and running tuck, but it says most girls have more running tumbling. Maybe if I would've known Clemson's requirements I would've worked a little harder in high school haha...I'm not entirely sure if they compete though.

Don't pick a school based completely on cheer though. If you don't find a squad that's right for you, don't cheer in college just to say you did!

Thank you!I won't pick based only on cheer, I mean, I'll see what scholarships I get, where I get accepted, etc, but I would prefer if I could cheer so I'm trying to find out where I could! And the schools you mentioned have all girl, a definite plus for me :D
Forgot to mention that I would prefer if a school had coed and all girl, or just all girl because there is no WAY anyone is getting me off the ground! LOL

I cheered/graduated from Clemson. It sounds like Clemson is at the level of skill you are looking for, with the academics to back it up! The All Girl requirements listed aren't exactly accurate, and they haven't been updated in a looooong time. Don't expect to make the team without a standing tuck/running layout or full. Both small coed AND all girl are competing in D1A at NCA nationals this year! We always competed one squad, but now the program is really taking off and it looks like they will be fielding two teams.

Clemson is a very rigorous academic institution. It's the most difficult school to get into in South Carolina, and year after year has been listed as a top 25 public institution by US News. Clemson is very well known for its engineering and agriculture, but also has one of the top programs in Sport Management, which is what I graduated with. New programs and majors are added every year!

You can't beat cheering in Death Valley for football, which was recently ranked the #1 stadium in college football. I miss cheering there every day, and each chance I get to share my story, I do!

Hope this helps! Go tigers!

Thanks! Haha my dad will LOVE that they have a good engineering program!

Baylor University.
It has amazing academics & isn't a state school.
It has a coed & all girl cheerleading team.
Both teams require a standing back tuck & a tumbling pass ending in at least a back tuck.
I've been on a visit & seen them perform. They're really good & Waco is a amazing area, with Dallas being a couple hours away.

Georgia Tech! It is my alma mater and I just started coaching there. We are in the process of rebuilding the program (and it will be a lot in the image of Stingrays honestly). Our academics when it comes to engineering are among the Ivy leagues (lots of our engineering programs are top 5 and a few are number one in the country). We are competing again for the first time (just CHEERSPORT this year but next year CHEERSPORT and NCA) and we do practice at Rays a couple times a month. You can check out gtcheer.com (just finishing our tryouts section today or tomorrow) and feel free to PM me any questions you have.

Thank you! I've been looking into it and it looks like it's exactly what I want :) Just registered for the ACT and I'm sending my scores there! :D
My dad's an engineer and an engineering professor at Mizzou so he'll be happy that the schools I'm looking into have strong engineering programs :) that's definitely what he wants me to do lol
