Greetings -

This is our 1st year on an official allstar team. My daughter took cheer classes last year and for the 13-14 season, she will be on competitive Tiny team. Being that they are 5 and under my thoughts were that this year would focus on fundamentals and setting a solid cheer foundation. As I'm learning from the team, the Tiny's are super competitive. The coaches would like to have them all doing back kick overs by competition and have extra tumble classes (paid by the parents) for those who don't have it. Im worried my daughter won't get it and be removed from the team. Is this level of pressure normal for Tiny's? I know as she grows older and advances that pressure will be there. But, I thought this was a bit early or I could just be a newbie :)

Thanks for your feedback!

If you are uncomfortable with this level of competitiveness, see if there are other gyms in your area that take a different approach. Feel free to pm me - my daughter was on a very, very competitive tiny team last year and I had some of your same concerns.

In my opinion, that's way too early for competitiveness. However, if its your gyms philosophy, there's not much that you can do about it. Are there other gym options for you to consider? My feeling is, if they're this intense about Tiny's the pressure is only going to get worse. You have to decide if that's the right environment for you---for some it is and for others it's not.

personally, I think a tiny team is the beginning of hopefully many years in the sport and they should have fun! Is the team mainly on the older side? If they are 5 turning 6 then I understand how it could be competitive. If they are 3/4 then it should be stress free and fun. As previous replies have said, you and your child must find the right fit for you at this time and in the future. Good luck!

I, like the others, think it depends not only on the ages of the kids on the team but on the objective of the coach/gym. My youngest daughter is at a gym where all full year teams including tiny's are expected to strive to max out the skill level and compete to win. Saying that, our youngest cheerleader started at 3 and turned 4 over the summer and there were several that were older 5s that turned 6 during the season. The kids were encouraged to be in at least one tumbling class and to strive to get their level one skills. No one was removed from the team for not having a skill. By competition time, every child had a solid forward roll standing up with no hands and a solid cartwheel. We also had several kids with back walkovers and front walkovers, but certainly not all of the squad. The tiny team has always been extremely competitive and even won several jackets. The were not an exhibition or show team.

that's crazy. i'm impressed when tiny's can make it through a whole routine without staring off into space.

Thank you all so much for your feedback. I was glad to hear I wasn't the only one who thought this to be intense. There's a couple other gyms in our area. We tried one last year just for classes but it seemed like a cheer mill, no family or teams bonds. Didn't really like the vibe. Overall, we are happy with out new gym and paid for the registrations and stated with tuition so we are here for at least the year.
I spoke with the coach and she said my daughter wouldn't be removed from the team regardless of her BWO. The reason this years team is more competitive is due to returning Tiny members who are a full 5 vs my 4 year old, the older ones have a year of competiting under there . I guess I was putting adding pressure on ourselves listening to the other moms. Most were saying that they were always in the top 3 and never could break that mark all the other team had full team walk overs. Lesson learned...don't listen to cheer gossip! Thames again!

Sorry for the typos - it's that autocorrect!
