Hi all! So currently my squad uses the ruby slipper grip to full up to extensions or libs. Recently I just discovered another full up grip that I really like, but I've only seen one team do it. So the flyer and the back base stay the same in their positions and then the main base and secondary...
I'm learning more as I go because I had no idea about baskets for middle schools either. I coach in Virginia and we're under Virginia High School League. The middle schools in my area have a local competition every year that is officiated by state-sanctioned VHSL judges and they have never once...
High school teams can double up. As for middle schools, it depends on the state. In Virginia, the middle school teams can just do whatever the high school teams do rule-wise.
So I cheered back in 2010 and our pyramid that year was two girls going up on opposite libs in the center, holding hands, and hitching to two prep groups on either side. That was legal back then, we did it two years in a row and nothing was said. Fast forward five years later and I teach the...
Not sure if other states do this but the routine format mentioned above is very traditional in Virginia. In fact, motions are only scored during a cheer section and any motions performed during music is scored for the dance. Also, the minimum time for a routine is 2:30, the maximum is 3 minutes...
I personally like having captains because 1) captains can be amazing team leaders if they know what is expected of them and 2) they act as mediums between the coach and the squad.
I'm actually having a problem deciding on who should be captain for the 2016 season. I have four upcoming seniors...
Hi guys!
So I'm a coach and I'm trying to do something different for next year's music. I really want to do a theme to our music and my favorite theme that I've thought of so far is MUSICALS! I just watched The WIZ on NBC and so I'm feeling really inspired. I coach a coed squad and I was...
Do you need a cheer or a chant? Either way, this is what I have:
S-R-H-S (make sure to cut each letter as you say it; better emphasis on the word)
We Are (Pause) South River!
S-R-H-S
We Are (Pause) South River!
S-R-H-S
We Are (Pause) South River!

This is the ruby slipper grip. I absolutely love it and you can also use the grip to full up to an immediate one legged body position.
Also this school, Cave Spring, used the grip to full up to arabesques.
I just wish most judges were more upfront about how they score for full ups because my squad used the ruby slipper grip to full up to a heel stretch, but we got the same amount of difficulty points that another squad received for using the cross foot method to full up to preps. I'm not a judge...
Very true. There were a lot of inconsistencies this year, and I honestly feel like the rubric should have avoided all of that if the judges had proper training. My squad had a fifty point difference between two competitions and I was so very confused as to how we performed the same routine and...
Ooh, love your colors! My own school's colors are Maroon and Gray.
Now are you looking for a competition cheer & chant? Something sassy in the beginning and then school pride to finish?
For a cheer this is what I have:
"We're back for the win
And here to take it all
We Bleed Maroon
You Know...
I'm a coach and if one of my athletes thought that I was being unfair to them and favoring someone else I would want them to tell me immediately. However, every coach is different and there are coaches who definitely have favorites and will make sure the rest of the team knows it (I used to...
Hi guys! I'm a newbie (not to cheer, but to this site!) and I coach high school cheer in Virginia. This is the VHSL Score Rubric:

I love the rubric this year because of how straight-forward it is and I really appreciate...
