When do you practice? Right after school? Later in the evening? How do you balance multiple squads, i.e., varsity, jv, gameday?

Not currently coaching but after 8 seasons I can tell you my favorite time slot is right after school.

School is out at 3. My practices were generally 3:30-5.

My only hiccup was if I had an incoming 9th make the team who was still at one of the MS buildings through the end of the year. They were not out til 3:15. I had no choice but to allow them to be a little late because it takes most of them 10 min after school just to get out of the lot.

As a mom, I’d prefer after school on campus. Kids get out of class, change clothes, go to practice, and parents just have to work out transportation home. Alas, that doesn’t work so well for a team that meets off site when the coach has a day job that doesn’t end until 5:00.

I practice when we can have gym time. During the fall season when everyone else is outside, it’s right after school. During winter, I beg, borrow and steal whatever time slots I can. The joys of a small school....

My CP cheers for our town rec cheer and they had to schedule practices around when the HS gyms were available, so unfortunately all their practices were 6-8 pm during the week and Sundays 2-6. We did two practices per week for 2 hours each and they varied week to week. So one week was a Sunday 2-4 and Wednesday 6-8 pm. Then a Sunday 4-6 and Monday 6-8 for example. We hated the Sunday practices b/c they interfere with Pro football games :) The only good thing about the later start times during the week was that she could come home, do homework, eat and then go.

We practice after school 3 days a week and then at a gym on Sunday evenings. This season we took a larger varsity and are not doing a JV, but past years we did the practices back to back. They would overlap by 30 min, so that while one was finishing with conditioning, the other was warming up. It made for long nights after working a demanding full time job during the day. We had the same coaches for both teams, so practicing at the same time was rare, but did happen on occasion.

We have an area that’s not useful for much else in an auxiliary gym that we have bogarted for ourselves. Good ceiling height and enough floor space to be functional, even though there’s no where near space for a full set of mats. It’s worth it to have a space that it feels like we own.

This year my niece was in 8th grade but on varsity at the high school that’s about a mile away. Middle School got out at 3:45 and practice began at 4:15. Her grandma would be at the front of the carpool line and she’s have 30 mins to eat and change.

This was also the case for the 7th and 8th grader’s That were on JV (Over half the team). 4:15 practice

The high school girls had just under an hour to kill before practice

JV and varsity practiced at the same time in the practice gym. Two sets of mats
