When I coached tiny/ mini we would have contests on parzticular skills - but the contest was not always who had the best or prettiest skill, it might be who was most improved or something - but usually it was about tightest motions, longest held heel stretch, highest jump - etc., When we corrected something an athlete was doing incorrectly and they started doing it correctly they were recognized too. We always emphasized and rewarded effort. It is also important to break the practice into components so they have a mix of preferred and non-preferred activities (my girls always loved to dance, so that was usually at the end but it would be earlier or later based on how well they were performing in other areas).
