I have been coaching at a very low income school that is located almost in the heart of the bad area of town. The kids on my team have wonderful spirit and all have that tough complex about them because of the town. We have been trying to figure out ways to get the other kids in the school to have more spirit and support the teams and participate in fundraisers but anytime we try and arrange something the school shoots down the idea because they are worried that some sort of violent act will happen during the event. We can't even have pep rally's anymore because of this. I have been racking my brain on trying to figure out how we can promote school spirit and have most of the students like it and want to participate. I am open to trying any suggestions at this point.
