I thought maybe this deserved its own post. Top Gun shared this from a fan on IG who lamented how TGLC’s 2007 routine was the “end of an era” in terms of brilliant choreo and that the sport has gone downhill since:

Since it echoes a lot of the sentiment here in terms of how flawed the sport can be, I thought it was worth discussing. I was not paying attention to AS cheer in 2007 so I wasn’t aware of this routine or the impact it had, but WOW it is incredible:

However, I see why it wouldn’t fly now (if for no other reason than those roll-offs eat up so much time, and I LOVE ROLL-OFFS).

    Thoughts?

That’s my favorite TGLC dance ever. I wanted so bad for Victor to update it for their 2007 routine.

I'd argue that Topgun has been consistent with choreography and crowd-impact like in 2007. TGLC are always a "must see" performance which is one of the loudest at any given comp (possibly only ever beaten by some of LAG or wildcats). I agree in general the scoresheet promotes limiting choreography and performance for skills but I don't think Topgun's choreo (or Cheer Athletics for another example) appear that impaired by it, I personally still get this same energy from them.

Theres also a point to be made that if the scoresheet is pushhhhing for skills, the genius in choreography is linking the skills so that the routine and transitions don't appear too boxy(??)

(also pretty much all routines had a different feeling and energy about them when you were allowed on the green at worlds just sayinnn hint hint)

I do agree they’re still the must-see event. At the very least the most memorable. I don’t know who won large coed two years ago; I just know that TGLC got second and that it flummoxed me. And even though I know Steel won last year, I don’t remember a thing about their routine, just TGLC’s routine (except for Steel’s tumbler with the crazy hamstring flexibility... that guy’s insane).

What’s crazy to me is that their elite stunt is literally a level 3 stunt present day. It makes me wonder where things will be in 10 years.

I think we’re going to move into actual acrobatics. Like those ten-high man towers they build in Spain (I’m exaggerating but not really). I don’t see where else we could go. UNLESS people get all queasy about what we’re doing and new safety rules are introduced that declaw us and we have to scale back. Like how in HS song/pom you can’t tumble over anyone anymore, but in my day you weren’t ish unless you had at least one girl aerialing over another girl who was questioning her life choices.

I can only imagine what level of crazy acrobatics TGLC and 00(whatever we are calling them now) will pull after Kristen and Victor have most likely taken this on board.

i think there has been a few iconic routines in terms of skill and wow factor since 2007, but it doesnt happen as often due to, yes the ever changing score sheets.

To me the shift in scoring is a double edged sword while a routine with that structure wouldn't score too well today in large coed I have seen so many literal jaw dropping routines from all ages and levels now that is something we didn't really see back then.

Yeah lower level teams used to be rough basically across the board with boring routines and struggle bus skills but Summit has really changed things and given lower level teams a renaissance.
