I can understand you being verified being a journalist, especially within politics. It was more of a "I'm not sure why, but....." thing haha.

If you don't mind me asking, did you have to do something to get verified or were you verified by the outlet itself? What does the verification process even really mean/consist of? I mean, I know that it means it's the legit person and not a copy-profile, but it still makes me scratch my head how they choose who to verify.

the outlet I write for is verified, so I had to change the email on my Twitter account to my work email, and then someone at work did some kind of ~magic~ with Twitter and kablam, checkmark. Idk how it worked--I was just sitting at my desk and legit just got a notification on my phone.

Nothing has really changed, except there's an additional filter on the mentions tab for only other verified accounts, and now my little brother's friends think I'm much cooler than I was before. (I wish I were joking about that last one.)

Girl, I went to a Youtube creator convention back in the fall, and the running joke was you couldn't sneeze without hitting some wannabe 'celeb'/'social media influencer' Viner on a hoverboard. They were giving them out for free to them like hotcakes in exchange for promotion.

Which I find hilarious (in a morbid, very black humor sort of way), considering they've all started catching fire. Not that I want people getting hurt, but you can't sell your soul to the devil without getting burned.

(Side note: they're actually banned on the Subway/buses in NYC now, because they're a fire hazard. Even if you're just carrying one- no getting on ANY public transit.)

It's interesting, though- because it's very easy to tell nowadays who promotes just to make money and who's actually promoting products they enjoy/use. I'm an old-school watcher of Philip DeFranco, who's like the Grandfather of Youtube and has really translated his 'career' into something incredibly profitable and sustaining. He admits what is sponsored and it's all stuff he either uses or is one of his side companies that sells cool merchandise (some which has been created by fans who get a percentage of their designs sold).

I always wondered how people with so many followers saw tweets they are mentioned in from others who are verified due to the massive amount of mentions they receive. This makes so much sense that there would be a separate one for other verified people as well! Not sure why I never thought about that

Now that you mentioned it..yeah that seems SUPER helpful.

As funny as it sounds, cheerlebrities were one of the ways I really got into all star cheer. I had stumbled across a picture of Carly Manning back in her Panthers days and followed her because I though that her uniform was super cute and because she seemed to be really talented.I guess that as someone who is the target demographic, I am one of the few bought in to the whole 'viner' and 'youtuber' crowd and the whole fame that goes along with that. Some of the kids that are famous are laughable. One in particular that is pretty cringey is this boy who is literally 13 years old but has millions of followers. Basically he is famous for lip synching on this app called 'muscially'. He has a single on itunes and apparently is famous for lip synching and posting youtube videos. His twitter is full of these weird tweets like "I love you" and "Have a good day princess! Keep up that beautiful smile" directed at his teenage following. My little sister in her friends EAT THIS UP and are the ones begging their parents to drive them across the state to go see him and other little boys like him. There are millions of 'edit' accounts devoted to him and she even reads fan fiction about him (Which is a wholeeee other type of weird.) I just wonder how people can actually have someone like this as their idol when all he has is a decent face and a trendy haircut and an idea for what to do to make 13 year old girls swoon.

I have a hard time wrapping my head around people who are YT or instagram famous because it's so out of the norm from when I was a teenager. But like you said with your little sister, I have 2 children who are 5 almost 6 and 7 turning 8 and wanna know what they and all of their friends are OBSESSED with trying to watch? Videos of people playing with toys---even toys they have to play with themselves. If I let them, they'd watch those videos for days and I still do not understand it, yet some of those accounts also make millions a year from YT videos.

My brother is the same way, he watches hours and hours of people playing video games. I have no idea what in the world is entertaining about watching someone else play a video game.

I do watch YT from time to time, but most of the people I watch are over the age of 20 and arent trying to sell me Fit Tea or Chicken Fries and they usually have content that I couldn't shoot myself with my iphone and a good light.

I think we also just live in age where there are so many outlets to connect to favorite celebs or express admiration for celebrities. The younger you are on social media, the more intense you are. Being thirteen and being able to have a gateway to contact your celebrity crush who is the same age is a gold mine. That's why kids buy into this internet fame because you have this 24hr access.

I will admit to being a serious fan of a lot of celebrities but I've never been one to cry or verbally harass someone who is not a fan of my favorite artists. Even when I was younger, I was never TOO crazy when it came to being a fan and this is during the height of Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana when parents were going above and beyond to get their kids a chance to see them. My 11 yr old son loves watching videos of people playing Minecraft. I agree with you, I just don't get how watching someone play a video game is entertaining; but fair play to those kids that make money off it.

Pretty much a carbon copy. And they go on and on and on and on...

Jacob Sartorius! I'm in middle school and the obsession is oddly common. He just released a song and people play it all the time (unfortunately :/). I don't really get it either to be honest.. He just looks like every other boy at our school haha except he has 100k followers or whatever.
