BET was formed before MTV. And MTV did play African American artists.

But I don't actually think scholarships and TV channels are good examples of racism against white people, so I won't get too into this. I am in the school of thought that white people have plenty of TV channels and magazines and scholarships. Just because they're not named with the word "white" in them does not mean they are not for white people. (this last part was not for you, it was for the people using those as examples)

Just wanted to throw out some facts, since you're concerned about her knowing the history.

BET started in 1980 as a two hour a week broadcast on nickelodeon and became a free standing channel in 83 when they started playing videos. MTV started in 81.

Ok... Isn't that what I said? 1980 was before 1981.

(but that was excellent use of Wikipedia - sorry I didn't remember the 2 hour thing, or the exact dates. I was just remembering watching it. Either way, it wasn't created as a response to MTV, since it already existed before MTV)

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree. I just don't think it is something you (not directly you) will understand unless you're a minority, or a person of color (in my case).

"White Privilege is arrogantly believing that reverse racism actually exists."

Then call me an arrogant person.

I tried to stay out of this but as far as the BET channel goes it was start mostly as a showcase for African Americans who wasn't seen on main stream media and music videos (MTV didn't play African Americans videos at the time). I grew up watching the original BET channel. The world didn't know journalist Ed Gordon, Donnie Simpson or Tavis Smiley. Or even the impact that teen summit had on African American youth. Take it how you want but at least know the history behind something before you bash it.

I don't believe she was bashing the BET network. The point was there's clubs, associations, networks, etc. of every race out there except for white. We aren't allowed to form any sort of group or we are racists.

Well since it was a couple of years before my time I needed to remember the dates. I don't think I said it was a response to MTV but an outlet for African Americans some I named that weren't seen mainstream. The actually channel yes played the African American videos that weren't shown on MTV. I'm not trying to argue or turn this into a race issue it just bothers me when people speak not on certain issues without knowing the full facts. I've spent my almost 28 years in the south and as a minority and a woman, i have been called the n word by a white class mate to me face and told to brush it off. Yes I have to work a little but harder at everything I do and it was great growing up and watching someone on tv who looks like you.

I know but as it was pointed out what do people do when they are rejected from something start your own.

FYI there's no such thing as reverse racism. It's all racism.

I had this same thing all typed out as a reply to that and decided to take a moment, and order a pizza instead.

But agreed one million percent. So no, I guess I don't arrogantly believe reverse racism exists, because there's no reverse about it. Racism is racism.

There's a whole tv channel called Black Entertainment Television (BET). They have magazines and dating websites specifically for African Americans. The double standard isn't new (I guess, depending on how you look at it), it has just shifted over time.
This statement just reminds me of when people say "Black people shouldn't complain they have a whole month dedicated to them". I just stare at them and ask, "So when's white history month?"

stuff white people do: wonder how to define racism

And an earlier article they quote:

stuff white people do: wonder where to start when they join the fight against racism

Though I don't know that I agree 100% with everything in it, but it's a good explanation of what some people here are trying to get at.

It also addresses with @HeresAThought didn't want to (and shouldn't have to) educate those who ask her to explain.

You are correct, BET came before MTV, but I remembered having to request for this and paid the premium cost, whereas, MTV was part of the basic channels that came with any and all cable service. Additionally, MTV, this channel excluded all black music videos and Michael Jackson's Thriller was the very first time anything of color appeared on MTV... When BET started playing videos and did not exclude anybody - we saw videos from artists like Lisa Stansfield, Lil' Jon and many White videos that even MTV did not show because of the genre of music - R&B... I remembered, Blacks were forced to create their own dance program - 'Soul Train' because richard Clark's American Bandstand refused to allow anybody of color on that program... Unfortunately, due to the world we inherited, many of the Scholarship programs that are race specific because it was necessary for the times...but not so much now...

Someone mentioned that admissions to medical schools are so unfair and I will agree wholeheartedly, if I thought everybody have the same opportunities and starting out even...
