It's ridiculous. My husband and I own a townhouse, but we'd like to move into a single family home at some point. Unfortunately, we work inside 128, so need to live along it and we prefer new construction which makes things so completely unaffordable.

We're both software engineers so we joke about getting remote jobs and living somewhere with a low COL. But I think I'm too liberal to live in most of those places hahaha.
It's frustrating but doable! (source: I grew up liberal in South Carolina, lol)

Even the cost of living in Charlotte is crazy high for me coming from SC.

We talk about this all the time! Somewhere mid southeast where life is more laid back, less costs, and friendlier people Where we live the cost of living is crazy, people are in such a hurry and rude, and u r what u r sometimes based on what you have.

We have considered moving back to the Florida Panhandle. I'm a sucker for the white sand beaches and crystal clear water!

Somewhere closer to an ocean than mid-Missouri... Like can go to the beach for a day or two and it be no big deal (rather than a 20 hour drive!)

I'm in the middle of Kansas. I hear ya! Although going from the Florida Gulf Coast to the Chesapeake Bay area....I wasn't swimming in that! Even when we went to Virginia Beach and Ocean City...the white sands and clear water ruined any other ocean activity.

I'm a little biased but I love NY so I'd stay here (crazy winters and all). If I relocated it would be to Cosra Rica.
Definitely too cold for me! :)

Catalina Island/Avalon, CA. I haven't changed this as my Facebook header since I took it almost two years ago. I've always wanted to live in southern California. I used to play California by Phantom Planet over and over the second my parents got home from work to inspire them to move but in case no one else was feeling it, I also sent boarding school pamphlets to our house addressed to them

My mom is from California. She grew up in the Venice area and my extended family on her side lives near San Diego. I loved going to visit as a kid, but not sure I could deal with the traffic. It is a beautiful area, though!

When DH retired we found ourselves back 'home' but home in Florida meant great access to the types of schools we wanted, good job opportunities for him and near family. Had we originally gone with where we were thinking, we'd be somewhere in the Oregon/Washington State area. Sometimes I wish we had gotten ballsy and did that and then there are times where I'm glad we didn't. Good luck with your decision, retirement is so exciting!
Jobs and schools are a big factor for us. As a nurse, I'm pretty much good to go anywhere. However, his military career doesn't translate so easily to the civilian sector, even though it's highly specialized. Our daughter will be going into her Junior year of high school, so schools are definitely a concern.

About a game of "anywhere in Canada" now? I mean, I am pretty sure some of you are getting ready to move in November anyway...
Hey, I did bring it up! :) It's so cold, though! But all my Canadian friends are so lovely and proper. I love it!

@AngelsMum24 I'm not sure how specialized his job was; DH's job translated pretty well to the civilian sector after a ton of testing and certifications, but we had friends move to the panhandle shortly behind us---her husband is an MP and she worked within the school system---and they're moving up north this summer after only a year. She said it's too expensive, not enough job growth and things just weren't working out. They're in the Destin area if that helps.

The Destin area is actually where we were looking at heading. We lived about 30 minutes from Destin when we were stationed at Eglin AFB.

I'm so over living in Massachusetts. It is a beautiful state with so much to offer between Boston, the Cape and the Berkshires, but the weather has been horrible for the last several years, my property taxes are almost $10k/year and the roads are in horrible condition or under so much construction that you can't get anywhere. I can't wait to move.

So, where do you want to move? or did I miss it?

I really liked growing up in Northern Virginia. It has a really good balance of weather, lots of things to do, a lot of history in the area, good schools, etc. But now that I'm an adult, I'd rather live somewhere that isn't one of the most expensive areas to live in the country or that has the worst traffic in the country. I've been kind of back and forth living between VA and the Dallas area for the past year (I think I've gone back and forth like 5 times in the past 3 months lol), but next week I'm officially moving down there! I don't know that it's my number 1 place to live, but it (Texas in general) has been up there near the top for a while. I've always wanted to live somewhere in the south, but I've also dreamed of living somewhere in Colorado.

St. Croix would be my first choice, but that isn't realistic, so the 5 year plan has us in either North or South Carolina. We own property in SC now but it isn't the area I would settle in long term. The weather and cost of living is mainly what sold us! I like the idea of the slower pace but I'm not sure how well I will adjust to that lol!

If i could move somewhere in the states it would probablybe somewhere north since i probably cant live without the seasons but exactly where i so not know. maybe michigan. But ive always wanted to live in san fransiso because of the lgbtq friendly (some what anyway) enviroment there but i dont know. i do love sweden so somewhere that is similar in climate to sweden probably.

Well it's 35C right now where I am, so I would say it's not that bad. :p But I agree that winter can be a pain.

One thing I do appreciate about NC is that we have all four seasons. It may not be as cold in the winter as all you northerners are accustomed to, but it can get down into the teens and even colder in the mountains. The summers are downright hot (this is still the southeast) but spring and fall can be pretty manageable. CLT is on average around 5-6 degrees cooler than Columbia, which is just 90 miles down the road.

I recommend not South Carolina.

I also can't think of anywhere in the US where I'd like to live. There's always something wrong when I start researching a place....too cold...too hot...too far from my parents...library system sucks....no diversity....COL too high etc

Right now I'm considering Austin, Washington DC or Multnomah County Public Library..(Portland).

But I can't bring myself to seriously seriously consider moving

We spent two years north of Baltimore. So much to do, beautiful falls, made amazing friends, but the cost of living and traffic make it a no-go.
