really curious as i know there are a few CEA members on the boards, but what ever came of the 2013 documentary that a few college kids did on senior elite. Was it ever put online or anything, i know the girl had a twitter and mentioned she would eventually put it on vimeo or something once her year of school was over but nothing ever came of it. I always super curious to see it.

@mstealtoyou do you have any insight?

Has anyone seen Hamilton? Trying to decide if it's worth the hype.

Have you listened to the soundtrack? Listen to it (a few times because you miss a lot the first time)!! I haven't seen it (not sure any boarders have??) but just from listening to the soundtrack a bajillion times would say yeah it's worth the hype. It's awesome and the cast is so talented. But it might not be for you, ya never know. But there's a reason tickets are going for thousands of dollars

I have tix for April. The music is phenomenal and the story is told in a way that draws you in instantly. My 12 year old liked the music so much that he used an iTunes gift card to buy it for himself; as he put it, "it's not like that usual Broadway show music".

I havent seen it live but I've watched a handfull of videos of some of the songs (I'm trying to not ruin it for myself before I go see it at some point). I'm torn though because part of me seems disappointed in what I've seen. A lot of the dancing looks like, idk contemporary/interpretive stuff, and I don't always like watching that. I like big, theatrical productions. Im sure there are some parts that are awesome and im sure when i see it, ill love it, but for now, the soundtrack is the best part. (It really is amazing and I've listened to a lot of soundtracks. The soundtrack itself is worth the hype. The story telling, the lyrics, the density, the fact that all the songs/characters/etc reprise themselves in the second act in a totally different way, it's really genius. Lin literally wrote the exact words of Washington's Farewell Address into a song. It's truly amazing.)

I'll see it at some point, but for me, there's no rush. I'm also waiting for things to calm down around hamilton because it seems like it's everywhere and you can't get away from it. I'm extremely happy for all their success and it's well deserved but it's taken up a lot of "oxygen" and its a little suffocating. I can go long periods of time listening to only one soundtrack but not when it's also what I hear people talk about at work, when it's on TV at the gym, when I hear remixes of it on the radio, when it's mentioned in my TV shows, when people talk about it on my podcasts, when it's all over. I need a hamilton break [emoji14]

Anyways, today is Lin's, Leslie's, and Pippa's (Hamilton, Burr, Eliza) last day in the show. One Last Time!

i hate to say this but i just dont get the hype when it comes to hamilton.... i saw the broadway show cats when i was like 10, so i dont know a ton about the area to begin with. Someone please explain to me why its such a big deal....

i know they apparently rap during parts of it, but is that the reason why its so hyped....

There's not an explainable reason... It's good and accessible is the only one. The soundtrack is amazing (they put a lot of money and work into it, more so than other Broadway shows typically would) and the whole show is on it (minus one or two bits). So anyone can download the soundtrack and fall in love with the show, which helps immensely. Unlike other amazing shows like wicked, where you can download the soundtrack and listen to it but you probably won't fall in love because there are so many missing pieces and you don't get the whole story from the soundtrack. You basically have to see wicked to know and love wicked. But Hamilton you can get from the soundtrack alone, which then makes you want to see the show. Also it's hip hop so it appeals to younger audiences (though personally I love musicals) and is different.
There's a reason it was nominated for and won so many Tony's. It's just awesome.

I wouldnt compare anything to cats because it's the worst musical of all time.

I feel like it's been talked about why hamilton is amazing on here enough but to really understand it you just have to listen to it. Other than that, our words don't mean anything. Especially if your frame of reference for musical theatre is cats [emoji14]

There are a lot of social issues as to why Hamilton is an important thing right now, too but it's really long.

again Cats is about the only thing ive ever seen, lol so i dont have a lot of broadway knowledge to begin with. ive heard from other friends thats its hyped because they rap and most of the cast or leading cast? is black. But coming from someone who knows nothing about broadway, i cant see the sole hype around it being because its a predominantly black cast, i mean i dont know, is that a rare thing in typical broadway plays......

i almost got to see Wicked while in London on my honeymoon, but they didnt have any showings the week we were there :(

That's not why it's hyped IMO. That's another awesome thing about it (the diversity) but the hype is because it's good, that's just a plus. But yes, most broadway shows don't have a lot of diversity in their casting, a lot of typecasting, etc. so it's refreshing to have a show with so much diversity be a huge hit and show that other shows could head down that route and still be successful. BUT people aren't paying thousands of dollars for tickets to see a predominantly black cast, they're paying thousands of dollars because they want to see the show.
The rapping is part of what makes it good I guess but I wouldn't say the reason it's hyped? Lin is a genius though and THAT is why it's popular.

Ahh so yes, the fact that the cast is mostly non-white is a thing that adds to the hype. Broadway in the past has had mostly roles for white people - atleast any lead roles. There are, of course, SOME musicals that feature non white actors in the leads, like the lion king, West side story, the king and I, but typically it's all white. (Les Miserables last year casted its first black male as the lead in the Bway production after 30 years of running. It took 30 years for on of the biggest shows to cast a non-white lead. Like it was crazy. And then he tragically died.) And the fact that broadway is a very expensive thing to go to limits who can and can't go (so mostly wealthy people, mainly white people). So there's been a huge disconnect for most of the other races in the broadway world both as performers and as viewers. And unfortunately, it just pushes more of the "white stories" because that's how they'll make money and so it perpetuates the cycle.

Hamilton has a huge focus on telling a story that was mainly about a bunch of old white guys founding America but it tells it through a more modern lens - with more modern music and more modern cast. "The story of America then told by America now." It makes it more representative to what America is today. The try to make it as accessible to as many people as they can through the Ham4Ham shows (10 minute performances of anything with actors in other broadway shows), the lottery ($10- $30 tickets for shows), the EduHam program (getting school kids to see the ply for $10 per student) because they realize that broadway is still not for everyone but they want people who can't afford regular tickets to atleast have the chance to see it. They're very socially aware in a world that typically caters to one race.

To expand a little further on the happenings of Broadway though - it's becoming a very diverse area in the arts and it's really great to see. In the musical area, this past year, they've had the revival of the color purple (all black cast), Allegiance (all asian cast), Fun Home (coming of age story of a gay woman), spring awakening revival (using deaf actors), and a couple more that I'm forgetting atm. On the play side, there's been a lot of other stories that have diversified the stories that are being told too. I know one is about a kid with a learning disability, another one featuring an all black cast, etc. Hopefully they can keep it up so more stories can be shown.

Cats is a big joke for my husband and me. We saw it together after freshman year of college and HATED it - we could not understand why it was such a loved show. It's coming back to Broadway soon and we are perplexed and amused that people are actually excited for it.

The music to Hamilton is very contemporary but still very Broadwayesque, and the actors perform it brilliantly. Daveed Diggs who plays both Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson just blows my mind. I've seen the play on a bootleg video and there are just some scenes that do not even do the music justice, such as the song Satisfied.

Being a cynical New Yorker I resisted the hype for a long time but am happy to have finally succumbed to it. No regrets except that I wish I could have seen it with the original cast. And even though I have tickets for next year I still continue to faithfully enter the lottery every day that I can go in the hope of seeing it sooner.

Oh Cats...kill me now. It's coming back.

I just saw The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time - well done and the set design was fantastic! Next on my list is either Waitress or Fun Home. I want to take my son to see School of Rock at some point this summer too.

I'm not going to lie. I tried to listen to the Hamilton soundtrack at work and I had to turn it off. I just couldn't.

From what I've seen from award shows performances and read....it appeals to who it appeals to and it appeals to them for a reason. I'm not one of those people and that is A-okay. I'm sure it's great show , if that's what you like, yay!
