I agree, I'm sure there are more gyms who nail the curls. Maybe I shouldn't have been so harsh, but I'm just not a fan of the look. Props to anyone who could pull that off, because I'm such a perfectionist (and cursed with very fine hair) that I would be locked up in the hotel bathroom for hours fighting with my hair.

Well I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience w/ curls lol.

04-05 Straight pony. HATED this look, as we had no bows, but shiny scrunchies.

05-06 Injured
06-07 Straight pony with a poof
07-08 Corn rows at the front, back combed pony at the back. Not a fan of corn rows as my hair is super fine.
08-09 Straight pony with bangs plaited to side
09-10 Injured again!
10 -11 Half up half down - top layer (the 'up' part!) backcombed into a big cloud, bottom layer curled. My favourite look!

This was 3 separate teams hence the TOTALLY different looks!

ill tell you my all star season. i started when they wre just making mini teams for nj i cant remember the years
minis- pigtails curled... I HATED THIS as i had to sleep in curlers in my hair at night and with them on two sides its really hard to sleep
youth- hair curled in a ponytail
junior- same as youtth
senior- now this year we do our hair however the coaches tell us to do it at our last practice.
sometimes its ponytail and curly, or ponytail with poof and straight.

my team does either half up half down or slick back pony with spiral curls (option of a poof ) and the girls with really short hair do half up half down with the ends flipped out

For the younger teams, they do 2 high ponytails, it looks so adorable on the young ones. The youth aged kids do one ponytail and the older teams do half up hald down with body curls. I love the 1/2 and 1/2 it looks better to me.

what's the deal with the "poof"??? are they really that cute???? we don't let our kids have them because sometime the parents/kids get out of hand and the poof is bigger than the bow!! lol

all the way up, and straight.

and if you're hair is too long then straight half up, half down.

I would love to see some pictures!

Gah, wish I had some! A few years ago, we braided up our hair and had a high pony, but the creepy thing was when our coach told us that we were having our braids decorated with pretty much cross stitching with glittery bands. OMG, it hurted SO BAD!

i hate seeing super big poofs. especially when it's just a normal day (snooki-esque) but i think when they're done in the right proportion, they sit with a bow reallllly well.

Has anyone else noticed that a lot of coed teams do the half up half down look more? I'm thinking like GymTyme, Top Gun, and CEA Coed Elite all have done it in the past.

My hair is layered, pretty curly/wavy and about shoulder length (generally), so half-up, half-down was my go to. Depending on how I slept the night before, I barely had to touch it and could just pull it up and slap on my bow. If I tried to do a high pony, I only had about 2-3 in or so of actual pony showing, which I always thought looked weird on me.

In HS we had straight pony with a bow. Never had a poof. Oddly enough, my hair holds heat styling like nobodys business. But a poof? Not a chance. You'd have better luck raising the Titanic.

Very cute...do you use rollers or a curling iron????
Foam rollers, in small sections. There is some product that all of the moms buy - that they spray on the hair right before they roll it - it's some sort of setting cream/fluid. It works!

I guess the only rule of thumb about curls is make sure you roll the hair in small sections and roll the hair in the direction that you want the curl!
