All-Star Not Showing Up To A Competition

It has happened many times in my coaching career. I have handled it different ways: The last time that it happened, she was kept in the routine, but was replaced in all of the routine by the person and she sqatted in parts, but this was only after we discussed with the parents what position they put me in after not showing up for the competition. Each situation is different, and needs to be handled accordingly to each gyms discretion/policy...

I can't believe that the parent didn't force the child to go. How inconsiderate to the other team members. The cheerleader could have found another ride. Apparently the competition wasn't important enough for her to suck it up and go to. You made the right decision in kicking her off. What she did was completely wrong.

They also have attention spans of .5 seconds... I coach a youth team, and right when we were getting all pumped up to go on the floor to compete, one of the girls turns to me and says, "I hope the steelers win tonight!" -____-

That's Honest!!! love that kid!! Go Steelers!!!! that is very random though!! Kid's say the darndest things!:)

Cute! Our mini team often gets all crazy excited for their award, then a few minutes later ask, "what place did we get?"

And on topic, ack!!! That is unacceptable and would drive me crazy.

This happened to my older child's team when she was on Youth 2. The girl didn't show up to the comp, no one could get a hold of her parents...we were actually kind of worried. Never saw or heard from them again. We ended up finding out months later that her parents were dealing out of their house to pay for cheer and got busted.....
I guess "call cheer coach" wasn't their 1st phone call....

poor thing :(

The 7 years olds have their issues too, just different from the teenager issues. The 7 year olds have 50 million questions that I generally have no answers to

The problem isn't when they have questions. The problem is when they suddenly think they have the answers.

I feel like even if the she wasn't kicked off, there's irreversible damage done to the trust that the team would have with that girl. How do you know she won't do it again?

this happened twice in one competition to us. One of the girls mom had a heart problem and was in the emergency room so legit. The other girl was for a duo so not super big deal. She got a strong talking to and now has been black balled from a team a little bit.

As most people have said, it's on a case by case basis. Normally, I'd say you're off the team- no if's, and's, or but's about it. But, I had an experience with this where it was a legitimate family emergency. We were upset about the no call aspect, but understood the situation. She was placed on probation- sitting out of practice and competition for 2 weeks.

We had 3 people do that to us last year on our Seinor 4.2 team. It was a mess. Unfortunately, their reason was because of recreational drug use...
Oddly enough, It was at the same competition we were at yesterday (location and company). I think that place is bad luck for us. Radiator falling on a child, a mothers car being sliced open from a hit and run, one child missing because of serious illness, another sick all day..
