she doesn't really have three privates a week. i cheer on the s 3/4, and the senior 5 team. i've been trying to reply to the comments but no one seems to notice. she was on the mini 1 briefly, and the senior 3. so when she says she was in the gym those days a week. i think she meant to say practice wise... but can i just say gymrat12 is right. there was a lot of editing that i wasn't too happy about. it portrayed both sides in a bad light in my opinion. but that's tv...

So she is no longer on Mini 1? That was the part that was bothering me, if she is on a senior 3/4 team then she should NOT be on a mini 1 team.

I agree that a lot of it is due to editing and it is good that people are explaining the situation more because unless people do that people are going to assume what they were watching is how it is. So thank you to those who are explaining the TRUTH to those of us who are questioning things.

I'll stick up for Step One. I have some friends who cheer there. Their parents are very excitable about any team at their gym. I get frustrated because they get to the comps early and save all the primo seats, and a lot if them go empty all day. I usually move their purple stuff and sit down anyway. I have never been yelled at by a step one parent for sitting in their saved seat. I make my move when a step one team is on, because any step one person within a half mile radius is up front supporting their gym's team, with joy.

If you're all about winning at your gym, your families aren't going to be this supportive of the entire gym. I find it hard to believe that a gym whose motto is "you, me, us" only cares about winning and advocates that the opponents are the enemy.

Sometimes I'm grouchy and I have to go sit by the sassy Matrix people (who save the other half of the arena) because the apple pie sweetness of step one is too much for me to bear. The matrix people aren't grouchy but their brand of sass puts me in a better mood.

My view of Step One after observing And interacting with them for 6 years is that they are more about relationships than winning. I think the coach is actually one of the owners and his talk with Hayden is probably a fairer representation of the gym.

Examples of editing I caught.
-There were 2 competitions the kids were getting ready for. I heard Americheer and Cheerpower being mentioned.
-they announced Indiana Ultimate minis as third but showed a cheer center girl accepting a trophy.
- parts of Gahanna they showed were actually the city of Columbus proper. I have only been to Gahanna a couple times but I've seen more of mckenzies neighborhoods than sad ghetto sections.

None of this matters though, this show is just an example of tv sensationalizing and editing to make a show people will watch. The formula was very similar to Toddlers and Tiaras.

If a child is not old enough to have their own facebook (yes facebook has age restrictions) then I do NOT think that a parent should make a "fan" page for that child. The fan pages for the CEA girls creep me out enough so imagine how bad it is when the athlete is on a mini team. It is kind of the reason I do not like watching shows that deal with children and their parents putting them on TV like that. I feel like at times it is exploiting them (not always). The facebook thing in my opinion is creepy (remember the thread about the perverted guy stealing cheer pictures not too long ago). Just another reason I think facebook should have stayed a place for college kids and older.

.

The days when Facebook required a college email address was a beautiful thing. See how money and profit changes things. RIP theFacebook.

And you are so very much right about the "Fan Cheerleader Name" pages on Facebook. Like please have a seat and get a life.

I'll say it again EDITING... unless you are in that gym how do you know if she actually has three privates a week?! And I will agree to disagree with you on being in the gym... It's better than what most kids are doing spending hours infront of the tv or computer

First off, her mom is a mess. I don't care how much editing they did. She DID say that "poor people were like giving us hundred dollar bills"--regardless of how many questions they asked. And they DID say she takes 3 privates a week. If she didn't want a bunch of us to come on the internet and dissect everything she said she probably should NOT have gone on a tv show. I'm sorry but I get so sick and tired of people going on these shows and then being shocked that they are edited to look bad. It's a show about little kids involved in an activity that most people find a lot of controversy with. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out this was going to be how they were portrayed (unless @kikiD22 is a rocket scientist, because she sure called it BEFORE the show aired:)) . And I don't care WHAT her skill level is, an 8 year old has no business on a senior team. I understand that sometimes younger aged kids have higher level skills, but I just think a line has to be drawn somewhere.

^ I agree with a lot of the comments. I did want to remark on the 'poor people were like giving us hundred dollar bills' statement. Yes it was poorly worded but I understood what she was saying. My family isn't rich, far from it. We probably gross in a month the same that most of your families gross in in a week and it took us awhile to get to that point. There are times that we have lived at poverty level and been on the medical card but despite that, I still dropped change in the Salvation Army buckets at Xmas time and I still volunteered at various organizations or found ways to help out those who were less fortunate. She was very emotional when she made that statement and I think what she was trying to say was that despite the hard economic times we are all facing that people who were really struggling cared about their cheer family so much that they literally gave them their shirts off their backs (ex: $100 bills). She was obviously very touched by that and I don't believe she meant to label them or speak of them in a demeaning way.

I was thinking the same thing. We competed against them on March 12 & 13, and I'm fairly certain she was still on the Mini 1 team. I could be wrong though on that. However, if she is, I don't necessarily agree with her being on the Mini 1 team. I am all for moving kids up age/levels if they have the maturity and skills to handle it, but I'm not a fan of those same kids double-teaming on low level teams for an entire season (filling in for injuries or whatever is a different situation).

@KikiD22 I tried to tag you above, but i spelled wrong. :D But just wanted to make sure you got credit for your psychic powers.
Thanks! I really wish I hadn't been right, because I think this show could have been a great opportunity to showcase the hardwork and commitment of these little athletes.

Still having not have watched the show, but just reading comments: I'm sure these gyms are lovely with lovely people. However, like true reality tv, I think it showcased all of their worst sides. Not the most well-thought-out statements and a little too much trust of the tv editors/crew to showcase them in a good light, when all they wanted to do was showcase the money-making light.

I wish you'd been wrong too...but I had a suspicion you were going to be right and you were. :(

Now...I am fine with moving kids up levels and age groups if they have the skills. But I do have 2 issues with this--one, like I said before, I think eight is tooooo young. Maybe if she was moving up to a Junior team...but Senior is just too mature for an 8 year old.

This part of my thoughts may not be so popular...but that's never stopped me before so here goes: WHY on earth is someone moving up THREE age groups to be on a Level 3 team??? It's Level 3 for God's sake. They couldn't find enough kids to fill a Senior 3 team without moving an 8 year old up? I mean, it's not like she's so amazing she's crossing to a J5 or anything. I just feel like she should wait. I know that waaaaiiittting is a hard concept for a lot of these kids to even wrap their heads around (or more likely their MOMS:rolleyes:), but I seriously can not dream up one good reason for an 8 year old to be on a Senior 3 team. Sometimes I think it's just so the mom can say "Oh, my Susie is only 8 and she's on a SENIOR team. Pay attention to us because we're so awesome--way more awesome than anyone else!" Can anyone give me a GOOD reason for an 8 year old to be on a Senior 3 team? (And no, I don't consider "She has a tuck and can double down and they don't have a Y3 or J3 team!" to be good reason. She can wait another year or 2 and perfect the skills she has. I don't necessarily want to sit here and "pick on" a child's skills, but really...she could work on perfecting her Level 1 and 2 skills before she worries about competing at Level 3.)

McKenzie is just an example--I also don't understand 8 and 9 year olds on Senior 2 and Senior 4.2 either. I'm fine with talented kids leveling up: like a 9 year old on a J5, or a 12 year old on a Senior 5. But WHY WHY WHY are all these little kids moving up to Senior teams that aren't even really high levels?

And again, before anyone criticizes me and says "You don't go to that gym. You don't know them" etc. etc. etc., please remember--they invited this by putting themselves on TV.

I think the gym owners should have done their research before just agreeing to do the show JUST because it's on TV. They were looking for fame and notoriety for their gym and not looking out for the best interest of their athletes IMO!

I'm a coach at a gym that was also considered for the show and we expressed MANY times that we would only be interested if they showed our program/kids in a positive light and we were assured over and over it would not be anything like T&T but more of a informational documentary. So with that being said I think both gyms got taken advantage of, which is sad because both are GREAT programs and would never set out to exploit their kids or families just for a little publicity.

I see what you're saying...but come on. What did you expect them to say? "No no no. We are looking to find the craziest mom at your gym and show the world the worst side of allstar cheerleading. We absolutely will NOT show you or your kids in a positive light!" They're TV producers--they will tell you anything they can to get you in front of their cameras. I'm sorry but to anyone that didn't see this coming...all I can say is REALLY?
