It makes me angry that people are bashing the fact that Maddie got spotlighted. I don't see anyone hating on Mikayla from SSX. There are 19 other girls on SSX too, but they cannot possibly talk to every single person on the team, or even just a couple and still have it flow properly.

Stop bashing Maddie just because someone chose to interview her.

I don't think it's that. SSX was just happy to get time you know? Maddie has been in the spotlight the whole year and people were hoping that maybe the whole team would get to share this moment. It's a lot more than the just one girl getting the spotlight.

I don't know if Maddie wanted everything to come out in this light (editing does change meaning sometimes!) but I will say that she makes it sound like "Oh hey, if I had to sit out for worlds this team would have NO shot in winning" Last time I checked there were two other girls who do the ballup 360 tick tock..

did anyone get this to put on youtube? or will it be online anywhere? i only have the absolute most basic cable so i don't even get CNN... i would love to watch it.

It is the same thing... Each team was a contender for the world title. One girl was interviewed. Would it be any different if they chose to interview Juliet instead of Maddie? (I use Juliet as an example because she has made such a big deal about it on twitter) It would still be just the one person being focused on.

I hate that the one positive news segment on cheerleading probably in years is going to be turned into something negative by cheerleaders themselves. =(

That is pretty disappointing so far. The language and statements some people are choosing to use regarding what team it is, what terms the interviewer used to describe Maddie, etc. are too bad.

This level of maturity is part of the reason people outside of cheer don't consider it a sport.

Let me completely honest here. I am not the biggest Maddie fan ever but in this case I think people should give her a break. Its not her fault she's been in the spotlight. I guarantee she did not ask for all this. She just wanted to do what she loved. Im sure she did not purposefully say "I" to make her seem the most important. I bet she was nervous. I would be. I just think their team really should just be happy they got this incredible opportunity.

Let's try and not focus on any one person or their reaction. People can choose to make this personal in their own forum. Try not add to it on here.

There are bigger issues like how CNN did a positive piece, some things they may have been able to do better, and how can the sport do a better job of having an image that doesn't take a 15 minute segment to partially understand

Mikayla hasn't been followed all year. We'll never know what the outcome would've been if someone else was chosen. Maybe if Juliet was chosen then no one would have a problem with it. I have nothing against Maddie, she's a great cheerleader, but I understand that these girls want to be known too. They want the world to know that they work just as hard as Maddie does. Again I love her, I hope I can fly like her, but this is coming from a person who knows how it feels to be on a team where there was the favorite.

@SharkDad makes complete sense! Just didn't realize they were two separate things!!

I think the segment as a whole was well done, especially compared to other stories about cheer that have been put out in the past. Sure, there could be some changes, but I think interviewing 1 girl vs 36 is a lot easier, and makes it easier for the audience to focus on one thing. I mean, think about it, most professional athletes that are interviewed are the big, famous players, not the entire team. Also, Maddie's an extremely well known athlete, and I think that also helped drive their viewership (is that a word?) for the demographics of their projected audience. Anyways, I think they did a pretty good job and hope more segments come about as a result of this.

I agree with everything you just said. I'm sorry to everyone if what I said came off as bashing, but it just angered me at the moment. Like I said, it did a good job at showing cheerleading and I'm glad they did it on Senior Elite because I love them. but I love ALL of them, not just Maddie.

I really liked how they did Jersey Cheer and I guess I just expected something more like that.
