Haha, thanks ladies. I can't take any credit, I only documented what my wife does... LOL. Here's a pic of the results...
Hopefully they aren't private so everyone can see them...

is there hair in a pony? I can't tell haha

My daughter was mini 1 last year so we always had early report times so I swore by curlformers, but I also got a curling rod from a kiosk at our local mall that produced awesome curls that I used occasionally that gave me great results, www.loveamika.com is the site that sells them, the curls hold for up to 48 hours.
Thats the curling wand that i use! its AMAZING. My hair wont curl with a regular iron, but with this, it works wonders. Its well worth the money!!

The best way is to figure out what works best on your own type of hair.. don't be afraid to test different techniques at home until you find out what works. I have really thin hair and it took me almost three years of doing half up half down curls for college cheerleading before I developed my own technique that worked and the curls actually stayed in after the first five minutes.

It's true that dirty hair usually curls better than clean hair because of the natural oils in your hair (clean hair is stripped of any of that) so wash your hair the night before, not the day of. My hair is naturally straight and won't hold a curl at all if it has been straightened before trying to curl it, so I usually put some type scrunching product or mousse into my hair while it was still damp and let it dry naturally. The morning of the competition or gameday I would just run my hair through a 1/2 inch curling iron starting from the bottom and going up. Having the scrunching or curling product already in my hair from the night before was usually enough to keep my hair curled the entire day. I have really thin hair, and putting any product in my hair after curling it tends to weigh my hair down, causing the curls to fall out, so I learned to stay away from hairspray (unless I'm trying to smooth back any flyaways). To make the curls look a little more natural and give my hair a little more volume, I'd run my fingers through my hair right at the scalp, shaking them out a little but not enough to completely brush the curls out.

This is the only picture I could find where you can actually see what my hair looked like. This was at College Nationals and it was at the very end of the day... curls not exactly "perfect" but still in tact, which is an accomplishment itself!

Someone PLEASE make vieo tutorial how to make curls like these!! I don't understand a half words you're saying in this theard

In brief...put hair up as you want it. In this case, just a bit at the front.

Get those giant clips to hold hair. Put hair up in clips leaving a narrow row of hair loose at the bottom of the head.

Get a small section of hair for a curl. Stretch it out and comb it smooth.

Spray the heck out of it with "Freeze It" (Walgreens/Walmart and so on) in Gold can. Do not under any circumstances use any other spray.

While it is still wet from hair spray, run curling iron from the top of the strand to the bottom. (It irons it flat and smooth)

Roll up on curling iron. Count to 10 really slowly. Imagine hair frying. Think about high straight ponys. Maybe count some more.

Gently wiggle hair off curling iron and let it spiral down.

Do all the curls in the row across the bottom.

Spray the heck of all the curls you've done. Let it dry before moving on. (If you don't, uncurled hair will stick to it.)

Release another narrow row of hair...repeat.

Can't make it any simpler.

I've been the go to mom for hair instruction/styling on my CP's teams (which got the best of me at one competition when I did 4 girls hair in one morning). My CP has super thick, super straight, HEAVY hair, and for us, hot rollers are the only way to go. She used to do pageants, and we learned a lot from that. Here are the steps that I follow:

1. Wash hair the night before, using clarifying shampoo and NO conditioner. Towel dry hair & apply a super hold gel. We use the Suave level 10 gel. I do not re-wash her hair for the 2nd day of a 2-day competition. We affectionately call this "Day 2 Hair."

2. Pull hair up into whatever style for the competition the next day (half up/half down, ponytail, etc.) and use lots of hairspray. I prefer, as someone mentioned above, Freeze-It brand. It's in a gold can, and I can find it at Walmart or Walgreens by us.

3. I go over my CP's hair with a hairdryer, while it's styled, to set the style and hairspray and to dry her hair before bed.

4. In the morning, I smooth down any fly-aways and re-spray with hairspray and put in her bow BEFORE curling. I use the Remington Ionic hot rollers, and I make sure to leave them plugged in to heat up for at least 30 minutes before use to get them very hot.

5. Taking small sections of hair, I spray each section with Redkin Hotsets setting spray (Redkin #22) right before rolling. This not only smooths the curl but it sets it better with the product on it. I do this for all of her hair, using all the rollers, smallest on the top, biggest on the bottom. After all the rollers are in, I spray over the whole thing with hairspray.

6. I leave the rollers in for at least 45 minutes (during this time we get dressed, eat breakfast, apply make-up, etc.). Starting at the bottom, I take out the rollers. After I unroll each, I split the curl into 2-3 smaller individual pieces of hair, re-spiral each around my finger, release it, and spray it with hairspray. It's time-consuming until you get the hang of it, but now I can fly through it.

7. After all hair is unrolled, I go over the whole head of hair one more time with more hairspray so that my CP's hair is hurricane proof, LOL.

I've received tons of compliments on my CP's and others' hair for cheer and pageants, so despite the fact that this is probably a longer process, it seems to work. I've attached before and after pictures of my CP's hair so you can see the end results.
