A girl once told me the day of practice that she had to miss a 5-7 practice on a Tuesday because she had a school dance. She was obviously lying (who's ever had a school dance on a Tuesday?) and gave her a warning and called her parents. Turns out she had to go into court for a really horrible custody battle right in the middle of her parent's divorce that I was never told about. I felt pretty badly when she started crying the next time I saw her, but I feel like it would have been so much easier if the parents had just told me. I would have backed off in a heartbeat.
...That would have been the perfect time for the perfectly legitimate excuse of a 'family emergency'. They don't even have to talk about what's going on...

I remember getting scolded when I was a sophomore for having to miss part of a practice because I had to meet with a lawyer about my parents divorce... I remember my coach saying "We all have family problems and none of ours interrupt with practice."

The only excuse for us to miss is a graded school project. We had one athlete come to practice, leave early, and then come back after practice was over to make sure she knew her part of the dance (she was competing in a UIL speech competition). Our kids are expected to be there even if they are sick, they just curl up with their pillow and blanket and watch the choreography. Even if your contagious, they have you pull up in the car and watch through the big roll up door. I haven't actually seen anyone do it yet. My cp practiced last year with a double ear infection, they told her to sit and watch but after 30 minutes she got bored and started marking. She has never missed a practice for either cheer or when she was in gymnastics.
The best excuse I have heard was tonight (not our team) "I can't come to practice because I'm stuck in customs at the airport." Evidently they went across the pond for the holidays and decided to fly back on the day of pictures and practice. Before that my favorite was "I can't come to practice because a bee stung me" "Are you allergic?" "No but it hurts a lot..." Well rub some Windex on it and see you at practice!

Does windex really help a bee sting??

I've done that before on my way home from work. It's one commuter train away and I somehow misread or misheard which track my train was on. I didn't even realize I was on the wrong train until it was too late.
Yea, but the thing is, there are only 2 trams that stop at her school. And both trams that stop in front of her school travel directly to the our gym for practice. :-o

Whats your opinion on missing practice/competition for taking the SAT or ACT? I had a teammate one year miss all-levels because she had to take the SAT.

It all depends. If she has taken it multiple times, then there is no excuuse. If it's her first time then I'm assuming a lot of others would be there too? I had a girl on my team who took her SAT's 4 times. On the fourth time was the morning of competiton so the bus had to pick her up in a mutual town on the way to competition. It was a real pain. If your scores aren't going up the second or third time chances are they aren't gonna go up at all!

It all depends on what they are missing when they take the SAT or ACT. If its a competition, no way is that okay. But one Saturday morning practice would be understandable. The issue with this is that the SAT and ACT have multiple testing days throughout the year, at least for my state they do. If it were me and the athlete wanted to miss I would first ask them if it was possible to reschedule for a different morning, if not then there is nothing I can do. Its a very tricky one!

the sat are once a month from October to June. I feel like there could be acceptions since certain colleges ask for Sat scores with the app for early app so you would have to take the test earlier on the year if that makes sense.

For the colleges I was applying to I was required to take the test multiple times, scores do go up when you take it multiple times if you put thw work into. I also had to do SAT subject test.

My CP rarely misses practice and the only ones she has ever missed have been for mandatory school functions and when she was sick (in the past 9 years). I could probably count the times on one hand that she has missed. That being said, I totally and completely disagree with whoever said if you are throwing up, bring a bucket. I will NOT make my daughter go to a cheer practice when she is throwing up and I would be LIVID if another child was sitting there throwing up in a bucket. I am her parent, and being her parent trumps a coach who "requires" my sick daughter to be there. Now, I realize that several kids/parents will just say they are that sick, but my thought is, the coaches know my CP pretty well and know she is always at practice. So, if I am calling you saying she is too sick to be there, then she is too sick to be there.

ive had to go to practice and i DID use the bucket to throw up in , hahaha its really nbd
