I just want to get everyones opinion on what they think about this. Is it appropriate for a coach to make their athlete promise not to leave their gym?

No that is not right, if the coach is in for the right reasons and has built a relationship with the athlete then they should be able to see and accept that they need to move on. If someone tried to do that to me, I would leave for that reason alone!

I don't think it is wrong, but it is up to the athlete to make the promise. If you don't promise will they kick you off the team? If so then I would be looking for a new gym. No one knows what can happen in the future so I wouldn't make a promise I didn't know I could keep.

this little girl that had to make this promise is like 9 or 10. she had to promise she wouldnt leave her gym for UA or else she would get kicked off her team. if that's not immature for a coach to do, then i dont know what is.

very true, i agree. but put yourself in this athlete's shoes. what would you really do? i know whenever something pops up, i just say that I'm going to do something about it, something that makes me feel confident. but when i think about it, i would probably wimp out. bottom line, this is too immature. it shouldn't be tolerated. & whats worse? if an athlete leaves that gym to go to another gym, and all the coaches from their old gym completely turn on them. then they make fun of them, at competitions they are both at, to their face. the COACHES. make fun of the ATHLETES. just because they left their gym. it's completely ridiculous! and to make it all worse, you probably just think I'm just visualizing this happening. but this happened to my friend. very.very.very. recently. and when i found out, i was completely appalled. ugh. it disgusts me.

If she was threatened to be kicked off then as a parent I would remove my child from that gym and take her elsewhere. To ask a child something like that is just stupid and to me unprofessional the their part. I would actually take my child to UA just in spite, but that is just the inner mean girl in me.
why do you say that?
probably because the amount of drama in Illinois cheer is ridiculous.

can i just say i loved that last sentence?
