For the 2012 - 2013 season, Varsity All Star is making an adjustment to our scoring that allows coaches more wiggle room when selecting their team:

For Standing Tumbling Difficulty and Running Tumbling Difficulty, 'squad participation' will no longer require 100% of the athletes executing a given skill. 'Squad participation' will now be reached when just 75% of the athletes execute that skill. (Ex: a Level 4 team with 15 out of 20 standing back tucks will be evaluated equitably when compared to another Level 4 team with 20 out of 20 standing back tucks).
Note: Level of Squad Participation is just one component that contributes to your Tumbling Difficulty Score. Other components, like variety, number of occurences, and the difficulty of the specific skills thrown will also contribute to your Difficulty score.

This new initiative should assist coaches as they select their team members, coach their athletes through mental blocks, and rework routines when last minute roster changes occur. From an athlete's perspective, it should also relieve a little bit of the pressure they may feel to be perfectly well rounded. Our hope is that this ruling provides opportunities for athletes that wouldn't otherwise get the chance to advance to the next level with the rest of their team.

Athletes and Coaches, what do you think of this adjustment? Are you excited that it could make the routine less stressful or disappointed that not every member of your squad will necessarily have the same tumbling skill? We'd love to hear your feedback.

Well it's better then 50%+1 or whatever but still it takes away from it.

I feel since we will have 100% squad tumbling that no matter what we should score higher. Just my opinion.

This gives all of Suzies mom the opportunity to complain that their daughter should be up a level since it isn't going to hurt the team so much because she is just 1 kid.

Between this and the new restrictions on tumbling for this year I'm getting the very clear impression that stunts (which already outweighed tumbling in the scoresheet) just became even more important. It seems to me that Varsity is really turning the focus to clean stunting and away from heavy tumbling. Anyone else getting that impression?

I agree that full squad tumbling should have a little something extra. But it seems we are being led down the path away from tumbling. Too bad.
That's what I get. I think varsity is saying if you want to be a tumbler go to gymnastics or power tumbling and if you want to build be a cheerleader. That's exactly how I'm reading these changes.

Varsity cannot make money off of tumbling. Think of NCA camp--you learn stunts, motions, game day sprity stuff and dances. No tumbling whatsoever.

It's sad but my 9 year old can see the writing on the wall and is now exploring power tumbling.

My cp's hands down favorite part of the routine is tumbling. Next is stunting. She could care less about the dance and jumps. (probably because she sucks at those lol)

Anyways I have already checked into power tumbling for my daughter and I think I'm going to let her do both. I will be so sad if she chooses it but it's like we are telling these kids it's ok to not have the skills but we are still going to reward you.
That's not how life works it's like me going to college but dropping out I mean I went so I can I get the same job and make the same money as you do although you got your degree?
Well not in the real world but they allow it here... All these rules are starting to piss me off!

My baby can dance and her jumps are 1000% better in the last year. so it's really sad that she has put in the work to be more well rounded and she will be placed the same as little miss lazy who can only jump or stunt. I think maye they should be like any other sport. Here is our group of stunters and then come the tumblers and then the jumpers etc. Like my son in baseball he only has to be a hitter and a strong fielder. He never had to learn how to pitch. Yeah, let's do that!
Yes I am being VERY sarcastic!

This is creating a reason for teams wh put athletes on a level that they are not ready for. You will see athletes on level 5 teams that don't have a full or double because they don't have to throw it in a routine.
I do not think that a team with 15/20 full/doubles should score the same as a team with 20/20 if both teams excecute the skills the same.

Like I said in the other thread, this makes me think of the coed stunting part of the scoresheet and how it really doesn't make much sense because teams with 2 underneath the girl can score the same as a team with 1 base holding it up alone. If you are going to put things on the scoresheet then those teams who give you that 100% then they deserve a better score then a team giving you 75%.
Expect to see teams winning bids at varsity events with more layouts being thrown then usual.

Quick reality check peeps......

....before the thread gets carried away with rampant generalizations just because a kid is on a level 5 and doesn't have a full doesn't neceessarily mean they are a lazy worthless cheerleader that snacks on little Debbie cakes and watches episodes of Dance Moms while everyone else is at practice.

And no, I'm not defending my kids, they don't have fulls, and theyre not on level 5 either. But I'm sure there are some decent kids out there working like dogs that just arent as naturally gifted as others so it comes slower. Let's not throw every less than level 5 tumbler under the bus.
