Actually, there was a book about the Green Up County High School cheer team. Yeah, yeah, I know. high school not all star but it was a very good book and showed both the athletes and coaches perspective. Yes, it is about a high school team (a multiple time UCA national champion high school team) but I still think it is good book for all star cheerleaders/parents/whoever to read. It also shows the unglamorous side of cheer but it's done more tastefully than it sounds like this book does.

I was just about to post this too! This book was great!

Naturally all the crazies come out of the woodwork now that this is being discussed. Which one of you wrote it? Because it's safe to assume it was one of the people that keep defending it on this thread. Not to mention, I'm sure the author used a fake name., so I'd love if someone outted the author.

Right. I read this thread last night and was like... why is this back and forth going on with all of these usernames I've never seen....in ever.

I have a rule for Kindle that I never pay more than five bucks for a book. So I was disappointed to see it was a whole ten.

DISCLAIMER: I have not read this book. But how exactly do we know that these "memories" or "experiences" are true? Are they biased by her personal dislike for a coach/athlete/program? Are they he said/she said/I heards? Because for those of you defending her as a whistle blower, look at it this way:

Lets say in my high school years I had a team mate who I didn't exactly get along with. I'm also a coach at this time, so I'm spotting kids. Then lets say years later I am a successful gym owner and my former team mate decides to write a memoir of her cheer years and calls me out by name in said book because she "remembers" that I got high and then worked a tumble class. That could be extremely detrimental for my career. And because I have no proof otherwise, I can't sue for slander.

It's just a dangerous precedent to set that every time someone has a "bad" experience they write an expose about industry members

There are several books about the cheer world.

BTW, if you engage in the illegal activity, you aren't a whistleblower. Also, while the First Amendment does protect our freedom of speech, press ect...you can still be sued for libel, slander, defamation of character ect. The individuals named and the organizations named can all sue her.

You go to amazon and then look at the kindle-version. You can download a free sample there. If you don't have a kindle you also need to download the kindle-app for one of your devices (PC, iPad, phone, ....) to be able to read it.

thank you =)

Instead of just bashing someone you don't know, why not try and discuss the issue at hand. Bad gym owners/coaches/parents and athletes and what to do about them. .
We discuss issues all of the time here on the boards, and many positive outcomes have come about as a result. For you to think the author was doing this as a public service announcement is foolish. It is an embellished accounting of her version of the truth. Does stuff like this happen...yes - every day in every sport. As several others have pointed out, most people report it to the proper authorities, not attempt to make a buck on it. I haven't read the book because I refuse to line the author's pockets, but from what I have read I hope anyone named in this book calls a lawyer today.

I made a point early about people who were thinking about putting their child in cheer reading this book.

review from amazon

"This is a MUST READ if you have kids interested in cheer. Cheer is not all about GOOD CLEAN FUN........"

reading the reviews i cant help but laugh at the 'two' people jumping down the throats of anybody who has any sort of negative criticism

It appears publishing a book on Kindle is pretty easy. Don't try this at home after puffing on a blunt. It may diminish your sense of self preservation!

Also, when you are finished with this scandalous look at the underground Illinois cheerleading world, check out MY tell all book, available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Wal-Mart and Target. 'Complete Cheerleading' is my personal memoir detailing our sensational lifestyles. If you are into literature pertaining to underage drinking, drug paraphanlia, and illegal activities, this book may not be for you. But I really get down to the nitty gritty as it pertains to: jump drills, fundraising tips, and what judges look for!

I'm sorry but I can't purchase this book and will advise everyone I know against buying it as well. She should have found someone to help her edit this before releasing it as the sample was horribly written. The sample gives the impression the author is uneducated.

From what I've heard, several lawyers have already been called.

Going to be hard to do anything if there is even the slightest amount of proof.

In general, there are four defenses to libel or slander: truth, consent, accident, and privilege. The fact that the allegedly defamatory communication is essentially true is usually an absolute defense; the defendant need not verify every detail of the communication, as long as its substance can be established. If the plaintiff consented to publication of the defamatory material, recovery is barred. Accidental publication of a defamatory statement does not constitute publication. Privilege confers Immunity on a small number of defendants who are directly involved in the furtherance of the public's business—for example, attorneys, judges, jurors, and witnesses whose statements are protected on public policy grounds.
