My 8 yr old niece asked for an American Girl Doll....personally I told her mom that they were too expensive.

I'm the Grinch of Superficial Expensive Christmas

This child also got an iPad mini for Christmas last year (I told her mom that was stupid as well). This year the child wants an iPad Air and promised to give me her mini. I told her to get out of my face before she opens her "find my iPad" app and finds it down at the homeless shelter

They are expensive, you're right. I wouldn't encourage anyone who couldn't afford them to buy one. If you can afford to buy your daughter one and know it's something she'll like, they're amazing gifts.

My 18 yr olds list is cheer bows, spankies, headphones(over the ear ones), jeans, cute clothes and some scary movies.

My 16 yr old son wants Battlefield 4, another controller, cargo shorts, slides and Nike elite socks.

And I don't think I can even afford all that. But they are old enough to know that after the first of the year we will go shopping with their Christmas money and they can get the stuff I couldn't.

And it's not because we travel for cheer or pay an outrageous tuition to a gym. We are from a small town and only compete local. It is because that's all I can afford, refuse to charge a credit card to get name brands or what everyone else has or to just plain go broke for Christmas that is so commercialized that people are forgetting the REASON FOR THE SEASON.

i did have quite the collection as a child, but shared with my sister and they were literally hours upon hours of entertainment. but i will say every so often a gently used AG doll or two shows up in the consignment shops of the area. something to consider if your child has to have one.

Yes! I'll defend them to the end. I spent hours entertaining myself with my imagination, which seems to be a foreign concept with kids these days.

I had Samantha, which I thought was the coolest thing ever since that's my name. That was probably my favorite toy as a child and I still have it to this day, dressed in a WVU cheerleading outfit.

That's why I told my CP that the first time I see hair cut or something drawn on the face, no more. She takes very good care of these dolls and still does play with them (mainly stunts them). Not sure when she will want to hand these down to anyone ;)

I love love love American Girl dolls! They were awesome when I was younger :) I could entertain myself AND my brother (his action figures would "rescue" my dolls). I have Kit and Bitty Baby :) Most of her outfits though were made by my Nana (dad's step mom.. she refused to be called Grandma) so she could match me :p They're both sitting on top of my closet currently. My grandma has a Josephine doll that my little cousins play with.

Oh goodness...don't even get me started on American Girl...that was literally my childhood. I got a doll every year starting with a bitty baby when I was four... And those creepy Angelina Ballerina mouse dolls they did...as well as the more creepy Hopscotch Hill School dolls they did...I've now got like 13 dolls collecting dust. needless to say my closet is creepy to open at night...might have a bitty twin or girl of the year doll staring at you lol.

But this year for Christmas all I honestly want is stuff for college since I'll be (hopefully) going to my dream school next fall. So I need warm clothes (it's in the mountains), a new computer, bedding, storage things...oh and an acceptance letter. :D

American girl dolls were the best! But now they're retiring a lot of the old historical ones and switching to modern ones.... I feel like I actually learned a lot from those books. Once i turned five my grandparents bought me one every year until i was 10 or 11. I had Samantha and Nellie, and every girl of the year for like 4 years, plus the just like me. Between my sister and I we had like 14 or 15.. But we used them for a long time and took pretty good care of them. The thing was, my grandma loves American girl, and she's the one who gave us dolls, clothes, furniture, etc all the time. She took us to the American girl store in NYC too. She only has 7 grandchildren so she kind of spoiled us :)
@alexamarysouza I had one of the hopscotch hill dolls too - and they were so creepy!

I went to the American Girl store in Chicago for my birthday once! I can't remember what age I was, but we had tea with our dolls and everything. It was awesome, that place is huge!

Haha I'm one of 19 grandchildren on the other side so not so much spoiling from over there!
The American girl store was amazing, the original ones at least. I've been to the one in Chicago and the St. Louis one and they're smaller and more low key, like you just stop there on your shopping trip. the one in NYC is huge though. We had sooooo much fun. Luckily we weren't too far, I lived in Virginia just outside of DC at the time and we were able to take a train.

I've actually gone to NYC every spring break since freshman year (I'm a senior) and I've gotten to look at it, but I'm just so old now that it's not as "cool" as it was when I was little. Wish I could've gone when it actually interested me!
