I flew in high school, and was 5'2 and 130 pounds. Weight really doesn't matter if you can SYS.

My daughter was moved back and forth last season for smaller girls that couldnt pull the stunt which she could but due to the bases they would pair her with-they either didnt come to practice or didnt do their job. It was a frustrating season for her.

This is slightly unrelated/related but I have a question.. anyone here who has stopped cheering found that they lost weight? (i'm thinking due to the loss of your cheer muscle?) I lost a few pounds this year and the only think i've done differently exercise/food wise is stop cheering lol. just curious!
I have! When I cheered last year, I was 15, 5'4" and 110. I quit because of injuries, and this year I'm definitely less toned and a little bigger but I weigh about 97 pounds. It's so strange how much muscle I lost.

When I was in 7th grade I flew all girl at school, I was 5'5 and 117 pounds, now I coed stunt. I currently am 5'6 and 120 pounds. If you can hold your own weight as a flyer, it shouldn't matter how tall or heavy you are. :)

I hate when people say "your too big". Seriously I am 5'4 weigh 110-115 and the girls on my HS team say I'm too big...these girls have been basing fetuses for years and don't really have strength. Having based and fly on an competitive level, I know that I am normal and there's nothing wrong with me. The only time you could be too big to fly is if there is much smaller girls who can't base you.

This is my problem exactly, right down to us being the same weight/height haha. My coach won't fly me even though I'm flexible and experienced. Instead she put an extremely inflexible girl who has no experience up because she's a little smaller than I am. So trust me, I feel your pain.

Well I was on a senior team last season being 14 and most of our flyers were fetuses so I was one of the bigger flyers and im 5'1 and about 95-100 (depends on the day) but I am also mostly muscle but im told I was one of the better flyers just because I can hold my weight better than a 60 pound noodle...So weight should not matter AT ALL!!!

I'm actually a little ticked because my coach basically told me I was flying next year but when a freshman fetus came in guess who I got stuck basing? She calls me over all the time to show body positins and when the other coaches it looks like its my fault for not advocating or stepping up..

I'm about 5'7" and 105 pounds but I was about 110 pounds during this past cheer season! I easily had one of the weakest groups because one of my bases was a 5'1" flyer but wasn't flexible enough to fly the main stunt sequence so they stuck her under my group as the secondary base. We were the only group to hit 1 1/4 ups, tick tocks, ball up stretches, and 360 tick ups. Not because I had a stacked group by any means, but because I had good technique and my other base and backspot worked hard to make sure they were perfect to compensate for what the other base lacked. A flexible flyer with good technique will stay in the air with the right group and a coach willing to work with it, but sadly some coaches aren't.

My high school coach did this to me all the time. I was flying but I was stuck in the back center. She asked to show another girl how to do a scorp full down so she could fly it at state...I was peeved because I already had the skill and it looked better than hers did. But she changed the formation and we both ended up doing it at state. But she always asked me to show everyone else how to do something so that they could do it at games but would have me do nothing even though my stunt was the most solid.

We had all senior flyers who were definitely smaller than me so I fronted, and in my district, middle school doesn't stunt. That being said, I have level 3 skills in the air, the best on team the team now, due to doing allstars prior go HS. I love flying and I hate watching her spend hours working with girls who are new and not giving me a chance because they are smaller to work with. I

I personally do not like the way it looks when a team obviously has fetal flyers. It is so much more impressive to me to see seniors basing other senior aged girls than basing 10-12 year olds who look like they're 10-12.

One think I have always liked about Stars is they have standard height, mature girls in the air. I don't see little sticks when I look at them. Same for Tsunami.

I think a big issue with older flyers and their confidence is that if you aren't a huge gym with plenty of correctly aged teams to build, most likely if you aren't co-ed or level 5, you'll be basing/backing a very young girl. And its hard because even if you have the experience or flexibility or potential, you might not get the chance because its just easier to put much much smaller girls in the air. I mean, every gym has their reasons for doing everything, but it just hits hard on certain girls who never get a chance because of these things that should be given a chance, like Mamalle and KinsleyTucker said.
