All-Star Flyers- Average Weight/height?

This is interesting. I was a flyer back in the day, I am 5'8 and 50kg (not sure what that is in Lbs). I am very thin for my age and my height, coming from a ballet background I was flexible and held myself well. I was lead flyer for years and years, then one day it all changed when I started to get overlooked for smaller girls. I was put as back spot and had to spot the most basic skills as they didn't hold themselves well, pulled themselves down from stunts and had no flexibility. They were tiny and short, so were automatically put as a flyer. It was the most frustrating period in my cheerleading career.

I was also told by a reputable coach I would never fly in a high level because I was too "tall". It didn't matter how many skills I got, it didn't matter! It was locked into there brains "you have to be this height, if not, you don't fly."

Unfortunately, at even your largest gyms they choose smaller, lighter 10 year olds; because they can.

I have seen taller/average size girls fly on popular all girl teams. I think size becomes more of an issue with one man stunts / College Co Ed teams.

Im 5'7 and 116lb and ive been flying for the last two years, was a side base for two years before that because our coach decided she wanted to fly along with all the other smallest girls (she put us in height order and chose the shortest section as flyers, regardless of weight) even tho she was rather large. and that is being complimentary. She was an awful flyer and luckily when we got a new coach i stuck my neck out and asked for a go. id already worked on my flexibility cos i knew i wanted to fly! my bases have said that a 5'1 girl on my squad was harder to fly than me because she couldnt keep tight, and the rest of the fliers i know have next to no flexibility. I know i am taller than most fliers so i make up for that by working on core strength and flexibility. AND i partner stunt, with a guy who is only around an inch or two taller than me! i hate fetus flyers!

I think it is a little different for group stunting vs. single based stunting. In group stunting, the flyer can do a lot more and many times if you have a flyer who is experienced, tight, and has lot's of muscle (but weighs more) she may be a better flyer than one that is smaller and doesn't have a lot of muscle. And with 3 or 4 people under one flyer, even a 30lb difference between flyers isn't going to matter much in comparison with good technique. With single-based stunting, flyer technique still counts for something but for the most part the base controls the stunt so the flyer just has to lock out and let the base do his/her job. Thus, oftentimes a lighter/shorter flyer is easier to put up especially since the base usually has to toss them to the top. That being said, it does not mean that a heavier/more muscular flyer can't single base stunt. I am 5'2" and 134pounds and can still hit rewind stretch double with the right partner. Just my thoughts. The 3 biggest flyers on the team I coach are most successful at hitting their main stunts because they have lots of muscle and great technique but the boys have to use the littler ones to coed stunt with even though they don't have as much body control because they are easier to toss to the top.

my team absolutely loves fetal flyers. let me tell you, feels a bit awkward flying at 17 when you're 5'3'' and 105lbs when all the other girls are like 12 or 13 and weight 70lbs. and it makes you feel pretty bad when they tell you that you have to have a certain stunt group because "you're the biggest flyer on this team"

we are in the same situation here haha

My Cp has been a flyer from day 1 and this year at 15 has been grounded. It has hurt her self esteem, and says that she is fat she's 5.2 and 115lbs (she's solid muscle). Though she's never been told why she isn't flying and she's to shy to ask. Its hard to watch your kid go through something like this.

My little sister is 5 ''4'' and 135 not overweight though. She is really good at staying tight but is to scared to go to the flying clinic because she is afraid they will not be able to lift her, or will say she can't. I try to tell her that won't happen, what do you think?

Can't we have an FAQ about this?
Like:
Is there a weight border to be a flyer?
No.
Am i too tall to be a flyer?
No.
Do i have to be super skinny to be a flyer?
(Guess what) No.

We could add the GCC pic in for "No"

Sorry, not trying to be offensive. Girls, if you have good body controll, if you are strong and flexible and willing to work hard: Go for it.
