All-Star Evolution?

Hopefully this won't become a total crapstorm...

But while watching the Worlds coverage this weekend, I had at least 1 of 2 rumors substantiated during the CEA interview. That being that between semis and finals, they practiced at a local gym, whereas previously I had heard they just practiced out in the field. If that wasn't even a rumor, then ignore my use of it and proceed anyway.

This isn't meant as an attack on CEA, but I'm curious if people consider this an evolution of winning Worlds or using an unfair advantage of your resources. I understand they did have changes prepared if they did not get the scores they liked.

Had they made the sacrifice to practice 4 hours at WWoS or their hotel, I'd say go for it. All gyms can freely do that. Personally, I feel renting out an actual gym doesn't seem as in line with the spirit of the event. Generally I think Worlds is about preparing and bringing your best to Orlando, keeping in mind winning requires routine AND performance.

Now I would never say a team should pigeon hole itself to not have any ability to improve scores between days. So I'm ok tweaking from little to large. But I'm not so sure it's fair to transport a team offsite to an actual gym where making those large tweaks much more plausible, or worse ask a producer to edit your music. As far as I know it's not breaking any rules. It's not as though they asked for the warmup area to be opened up exclusively for them, but would you consider what they did do within reach of the majority of the other gyms competing?

After Worlds everybody was saying CSP is so smart. She changed the routine last year and won, she changed the routine this year and won, this may be the way to win Worlds. I'm not so concerned with that the changes were made, but how they were implemented. Is it really outsmarting somebody, or just making use of resources that IMO, most don't have?
I have read all the posts, there are many things that can be adjusted and fixed at the Worlds Events. I don't think it is necessarily a have and have nots thing. Take the fact that A) it needs to make money or at least real even. B) The amount of teams at the event. So now we have a lot of bids, paid, at large, and partial. There are teams there that won an at large bid throwing fulls. Why? The need of teams and money. A lot of teams in the past came from gyms combining at the last minute at an out of the way event to get a bid. These last cases are at a disadvantage. This not anyone's fault. On actuality we need less bids, however that is less revenue. Kinda the issue with international teams, that is another thread. Let me say this about Courtney, for every one who loves her, she has as many who envies her. Her mind and heart is on her kids. Many small time gyms have places to practice, even we have. However, Courtney had the forethought for the changes she thought she might need. The music issue is something I hate, that's a judge call which is irrelevant, another topic. Again, Courtney had that under control as well. This is not unethical nor illegal. She did her job and took care of that team and all her teams. Just my opinion!

so i read through all of this thread and it tends to go back and forth with certain topics. but in my opinion i dont think courtney did anything wrong by going to an outside gym for more practice. she clearly had a lot of back up plans coming into worlds, so i cant really hate on her for that. That being said, plenty of teams who went to NCA practiced at CA on their mats, so did that give all those teams an advantage over winning then the others??? ehh no. its worlds you do everything you can possibly do to prepare.

I think this whole thread would be mute if there was consistency in scoring across all EPs. Teams would not have to change their routine to "fit" the competition. Teams would come with their best routine and would truly be scored on their performance. Last minute changes would not have to be made. I myself am guilty of throwing in a couple extra baskets for the second day. As a coach you have to do whatever you can do ;)

Some people have routine A and B - sometimes you need to use A to position yourself and then go to B to seal the deal.

This might work out ok if the second day all scores start new but what about the comps that are 25/75 split or even 50/50 - Yikes that could be a mess!

I don't see why it wouldn't work the same. Unless day 1 was so terrible that you don't even have a chance to get on top this could swing both ways also.

and i think thats smart! i said it before, but worlds is generally the last competition for most. if you aren't willing to change a few things, than you might as well not even read the judge's comments, because its your last competition anyway. you arent gonna go back to practice and change your routine when that was your last comp.. i think its very smart and just makes sense to change things to make it what the judges want to have the best chance possible! isnt that why you're there in the first place?
