I fell like someone on tv (Nastia maybe?) said that the US is the reason that it went from 7 gymnasts to 5. Anyone know the history there? What's the reason for the change again to 4 plus 2 specialists?

Basically over the last 16 (20) years US gymnastics has surged to dominance while other countries had difficulty fielding teams of 7. Or 5. Or 6.

While we're having to leave competitive gymnasts at home.... Romania.

I just wish that these young women athletes can benefit from their athletics during the short peak period. It just seems so unfair to have these young athletes make this kind of major decisions...

Hmm, Give up the Wheaties box and/or bobble head dolls for scholarships and school sport participations.

Is The Ranch owned entirely by the Karolyi's? And if so do people think that USA Gymnastics will buy out the facility once Marta retires following Rio and continue with the current semi-centralised system being used or will USA Gymnastics switch to a different selection format for the next quad leading to 2020?

I watched a live stream of Nastia answering question on Facebook and that was one of the ones asked. I cut it off halfway through her answer, but I did hear her say training will continue at the Ranch. Ranch is the official US Training Center. Not sure if the Karolyi's will remain on site or relocate.

Did you watch The Ranch documentary? No way Bella is leaving his animals and that property.

I watched this video about Jordyn Wieber and it was really heartbreaking to hear Jordyn talk about how much she always wanted to be a college gymnast :(

I've been told USAG actually bought the ranch recently. I don't know if that means there moving I have a feeling it goes more along the lines of The Ranch will be USAG's out right once the Karolyi's pass.

I've been to multiple UCLA meets the past 3 years since Jo's been the team manager and now volunteer coach. I really love seeing Jo out on the floor and she seems to genuinely be a member of the team even if she can't compete. I get the feeling Jo is content in her role of being part of the team in the way she can but does wish she could compete at the same time. UCLA team managers have always been my fave because they really do seem to be apart of the team. I'm so excited for next year with so many great freshmen coming in including Kyla Ross and Madison Kocian if she doesn't defer!

I can't answer the former, as for the latter...

It's because the current system is a huge disadvantage for individual event specialist who come from countries that can't field a full team. Event specialist such as Krisztián Berki(Hungarian, 2012 Olympics gold medalist on pommel horse), Dipa Karmakar (Indian, vault specialist) etc. come from countries where fielding/qualifying a full team is impossible. Right now event specialist only have ONE way of qualifying to the Olympics and that's to get onto the podium at the World Championships prior to the upcoming Olympic games.

Krisztián Berki had an off day during WC 2015 which basically ended his journey for Rio, the only other way he could qualify for the Olympics was to compete at the Rio test event as an AA (they ONLY let you qualify through AA if you don't have a team) and he doesn't train in all 6 events. And even if he started training on the others immediately, it would be difficult to qualify in the top 24 for someone who's never competed AA. Dipa Karmakar went against the odds and qualified herself through AA at the Rio test event, so a huge pat on the back to her, but it's more difficult for men with 6 apparatus.

The current system leaves out a lot of the best specialist around the world and places a huge amount of pressure at one competition (WC). The new system allows specialist to qualify through world challenge cup, which don't place as much pressure on the athlete and is spread throughout the year. This system will benefit teams like the Chinese MAG who have single-event specialist who can almost definitely get gold at the Olympics in their event but because they can't contribute to the TF, get left out.

Also, the new system allows top 20(WAG)/ 12(MAG) AA finishers to earn an automatic berth to the Olympics (if their teams haven't already qualified) so people like Larisa Iordache don't get screwed over again. The idea behind not having AA podium finishers given a berth to the Olympics was because it wasn't common for a podium finisher to come from a country that didn't already qualify a team to the Olympics... but Larisa Iordache and Manrique Larduet (Cuba, placed 2nd AA at WC 2015) happened. Luckily for Manrique, he qualified through his bronze in HB.

ETA: Wanted to include that previously only teams that qualified in the top 24 in the 2nd year WC are allowed to compete at the 3rd year WC (Olympic qualifying year), the new system allows any country who can field a team to compete for a team spot at the 3rd year WC now.

I believe this also means the Olympic Test event would be irrelevant in terms of qualifying for the Olympics, which would be really unfortunate for countries that have exceptional Juniors who turn Seniors in Olympic year allowing them to form a strong team (France and Belgium WAG this year qualified through Rio Test event with a couple of 2000-born on their teams).

I never saw that chart before, so thanks for sharing! Does the "1 host country place" mean another guaranteed athlete from the host country? So in theory if LA gets the 2020 bid, the US can have another gymnast? lol that's like the opposite of what they were trying to do, but in the long run I'm sure it's great.

Well, the 2020 Olympics is definitely going to be held in Tokyo, so I think you meant the 2024 Olympics? The "1 host country place" is only valid if the host country hasn't already qualified a team or gymnast through other ways (such as the World Championships or World Challenge Cup). In the case of Japan, they'll most likely qualify both their MAG and WAG teams, so I believe the "host country" spot just gets forfeited (what happened with Brazil for this Olympics).

If L.A. does win the bid to host the 2024 Olympics, and F.I.G. doesn't change any of their Olympic qualifying policies for the following quad, then the extra spot will most likely be forfeited as well since U.S.A. is very much capable of qualifying both their MAG and WAG teams.
