In your experiences in the NICU did you work with or come in contact with a child life specialist at all?
The Child Life program for NICU deals mostly with preparing siblings of our patients for visits into the unit. The majority of our patient population is just too little for the services they provide. I see them doing their best work with our PICU/peds and oncology kids. Its a great job, but a very difficult one to get due to how few of them there are. We employ over 300 nurses in our Childrens hospital, and there are around 6-8 child life team members. Some of them are unpaid interns as we are a teaching hospital. The Fierceroid

I worked as a pediatric nurse on a 'comprehensive care' unit for many years. This was a unit that served as a combined unit of NICU step down patients, children with cancer, step down from PICU, children with congenital conditions and diseases, and children with traumatic injuries. We had Child Life Specialists there and they were WONDERFUL. They helped the children cope and deal with their hospitalization and illness, and assisted the families to guide them on the best ways to help their children. They were an integral part of the healthcare team, and were treated as such. I valued their help and assistance and learned a lot more from them then I truly realized at the time. It's a profession that is rewarding, demanding and sometimes heartbreaking, yet seems to make all the difference in the world to the children, their families, and even the health care team.

Yep, I've already applied to 5 unpaid internships! I have an interview coming up so I'm really excited for the opportunity! I'm a child life practicum student in a pediatric emergency department right now and it's been a great opportunity to see a lot of procedure preparation and support. I also volunteer at another local children's hospital in the inpatient oncology so I get to do a lot of activities with the patients over there, which is awesome as well. It really all does make a world of difference and it's awesome to hear that from the nurses as well! Thank you guys for your replies!! @littlestALLSTAR @jcheermom @crazeecheermom

Flash cards, flash cards, and more flash cards. I bought them in packs of 1000 at Sams and they were my bff. Now I use an app called flashcards deluxe and I'd really recommend it. You make your own cards using excel and can have pictures or sound recordings on there too so that really helps. It sounds complicated but the directions are pretty straightforward on the app developer's website (orangeorapple.com). And on that app you can use premade Quizlet decks if you don't have time to make your own

Quizlet is my savior right now, I have my first practical over the language of anatomy, organ systems, classification of tissues, and the integumentary system tomorrow. It's alot, but I know I can do it!
